UNITED STATES Patented September 27, 1904.
WILLIAM HARE, OF DANVILLE, ILLINOIS.
DENTAL MOUTH PROP AND MIRROR, CHEEK-DISTENDER, 81.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,854, dated September 27, 1904.
Application filed December '7, 1903. Serial No. 184,243. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM HARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Vermilion, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Mouth Props and Mirrors, Cheek-Distenders, and Tongue-Protectors for Use in Dentistry; and the following is a clear description of the device, so that others skilled in the art of dentistry can use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in a dental mouth prop and mirror, cheek retractor, tongue-protector, and the construction herein shown is an improvement upon the device covered by Letters Patent No. 692,281, issued to me on the 4th day of February, 1902.
The object of this invention is to construct a device which may be formed out of a single plate ofmetal, dispensing with the wire frame, as in Patent No. 692,281, by a device constructed so as to prop the jaws apart, hold the checks out of the way of the operator, and to reflect light on the teeth operated upon, allowing the dentist free use of both hands, which is a help to him in his work.
The above device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in the mouth. Fig. 2 is a clear View as seen from the lower part of the device; Fig. 3, a plane front view.
Similar letters. refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A designates the device, which may be constructed from a single plate of any suitable metal swaged into the shape required. Said device is provided with a lower cheek-retractor B and is connected with the rear of the device at C and the front thereof at E by a curved bracket F. The device is provided with a suitable opening G on the lower side to allow the teeth to pass through to be operated upon.
The concave tongue-protector E at its points of junction with the bracket F extends and concaves-outwardly, as at H, and upwardly at I, which curves downwardly to form the bracket J, thence upwardly at K, thence downwardly, which forms the upper cheek-retractor L. Said retractor is connected with the device by the bracket J at the front and also connected at the rear at M and corresponds with the lower retractor B. The opening N in the upper part of the device, to allow the teeth to pass through to be operated upon, corresponds with the opening G in the lower part of the device, which forms the channels or opening for the upper and lower teeth, whereby the device may be securely retained in the mouth of the patient by closing the teeth thereon.
The construction of the device is such that when placed in the mouth the checks are held away from the teeth by the retractors L and B, while the teeth are exposed through the openings N and G in the upper and lower part of the device. The bracket J and F act as a support or prop to hold the mouth open. When placed in position, the device serves as a prop to hold the mouth open. and outer side being open, allows free access to the teeth to be operated upon.
Having thus set forth my invention of an improvement as aforesaid, what I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
An article of manufacture stamped from asingle piece of thin metal, comprising a portion with a smooth reflecting-surface on its inner side; a protector for the tongue, upper and lower retractors with teeth-openings at the inner edges of the upper and lower retractors.
WILLIAM HARE.
