Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. WELLING, of New Rochelle, in the county ot' Westchester, and State of New York, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Bed-Pan Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exactdescripticn of the' said invention, reference being 'had to the annexed drawing, making partof this specification, wherein I have representeda vertical section of said bed-pan attachment. Y

In hospitals, and in cases of protracted sickness, greatditiieulty has been expcriencedin the'useof bed-pans for sick persons. The movement necessary for the use of the same frequently aggravates the disease, and with several cases' of sickness the cvacuations pass olf unconsciously, rendering the bed very offensive, and increasing the labor of attendants, and, with some diseases, spreading the contagion.

` The nature of my said invention consists in a movable elastic funnel-shapedseat,`combincd witha pipo passing through the mattress to a coveredvessel or pan beneaththe bed, whereby 4the patient can be kept in a comfortable position, and the evacaations will be conveyed awayV to a closed vessel, and the cleanliness of the bed maintained, at the saine time that the risk of contagion ismaterially lessened.

In the drawing, a represents thc frame, and Z the slats of a'bedstead. .This may he of any usual character,` but I prefer thatthe head sect-ion of the slats be fitted so as -to be `inclined the same aswith surgical bedsteads.

c is the mattress, through which is an opening receiving the flaring end of lthe flexible or elastic pipe cl, that is provided with a cock, e, or other suitable dcvi'ce for-closing said pipe,andfis the covcrof the pan g, to which cover the end ofthe pipe tl, or its cock, is connected. y

-t is a movable elastic funnel-shaped seat-piece, that is of a convenient size and sha'pcfor the person, and is not uncomfortable to thc person using the same, when the weight, or a portion thereof, is resting thereon, ,and

this conveys all cvacuations to the pipe CZ, and thence to the pan y.

This seat-piece can bc easilj,r removed, if necessary, for cleansing, and it is preferable that the sheet or other vcover to the mattress chave a hole through it at the proper place tocoincide with this seat-piece, as seen at z'.
