RUBBER FOR MASSAGE IMPLBMENTS.
APPLICATION FILED SEPTJ30, 1904'.

PATENT OFFICE.
RUBBER FOR MASSAGE IMPLEMENT S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,715, dated February 14, 1905.
Application filed September 30, 1904:. Serial No. 226,686. I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES BARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing'in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Rubbers for Massage Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a massage device intended to be secured to a vibrating shaft, the object of my invention being to employ a massage device composed of rubber or other flexible or elastic material in such a way that the secure attachment of the same to the operating-shaft can be eiIected.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional view of a massage device made in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of part of the device.
The massage device consists of a disk 1, of rubber or other yielding or elastic material, having a series of studs 2 projecting from the working face of the same. In this rubber disk is embedded the head 3 of a carrier which has a projecting screw-stem 4, whereby the massage device is connected to the operating mechanism therefor, and in order to increase the hold of the carrier upon the rubber disk said head 3 has formed in it a series of openings 5, as shown in Fig. 2, and the masses of rubber in front and rear of the head are connected together by portions 6 passing through these openings, whereby the secure retention of the rubber disk upon the carrier is insured.
On the back of the disk 1 is a projecting annular rib 7, which surrounds a recess adapted for the reception of a flange 8 upon a nut 9, which is adapted to the screw-stem 4, an annular groove 10 intervening between the flange 8 of the nut and the main portion of the same, which groove is of greater width than the coarsest hair, sothat there is no possibility of a hair being caught at the base of the disk 1, as there might be if the same abutted against the face of the nut.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent" 1. A massage device consisting of a disk of flexible or elastic material having at the back an inwardly-projecting rib for engaging with a carrier and another rib projecting rearwardly therefrom, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, in a massage device, of
a carrier having an enlarged head with openings therein, and a disk of flexible or elastic material covering said head, and having an inwardly-projecting rib overlapping the back of same, said rib being connected to the portion in advance of the head by portions extending through the openings of the latter, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, in a massage device, of a carrier having an enlarged head, with a disk of flexible or elastic material having an inwardly-projecting rib which overlaps said head and an annular rib projecting rearwardly therefrom, and a nut having a portion which is adapted to the recess bounded by said annular rib, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, in a massage device, of a disk of flexible or elastic material having a carrier-stem projecting rear w ardl y therefrom, and a rearwardly-projecting annular rib, with a nut having a flange adapted to the recess bounded by said rib, said nut having, adjacent to said flange, an annular groove, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES BARKER.
