l'O ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERNW: i Y
Be it known that I, L: F. WHEATON, of Madison, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Dust-Pan; and I do hereby declare thefollowing, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of" the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents a perspective view of a common dust-pan, w1tu my improvement attached.
This invention relates to an improvement ina common dust-pan, the object being to avoid the necessity ot stooping to hold the pan While brushing dust en dirt thereon; and consists in constructing the pan with several points near its rear or handle-end, which, while they raise that end ofthe pan into about the position it will be hold by the sweeper the points resting upon the carpet holdthe pan so firmly that the dust or dirt may be swept thereon in the usual manner, without n iovingthe pan.
'lo enable others to construct my improvement, I will proceed to deseribethe same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. l
A is a dust-pan of common construction; Bfthe handle. Upon the bottom ofthe pan, and near thehandle, I arrange a bar, C, extending across the pan, or nearly so, and upon the under edge of said bar I fix pins or points a, so that while the bar raises the rear end of the pan, the points set into the fibres of the carpet sulcient to hold the pan in the position in which it is placed upon the door: The bar is not essential, as the points may be of sufficient length to raise the-rear end of" the pan; but yet I prefer the bar, as by its usethc points may be shortened by so much as the depth of the bar, and therefore less liable to injury.
Having thus fully described invention, what I claim as new and'useful, and desire to secure by Lettersl A dust-pan, having the points a arranged near its handle-edge, so as to elevate and hold the pan, substan- I tially in the manner and for the .purpose described. v
L. I". WHEATON.
