UNITED YSTATES LOUIS FERDINAND DOELLINGER, OF DES MOINES, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF Patented July 18, 1905.
PATENT FFICD.
PNEUMATIC PILLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 795,108, dated July 18, 1905.
i Application led December 14, 1904. Serial No. 236,883.
Vto provide means for readily infiating the same.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pillow equipped with my invention. tical section through the same upon the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation, partly broken away, showing the in- Hating-pump. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the pillow when deiiated and partly folded, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the pillow completely folded.
An iniiatable rubber bag 6 constitutes the pillow propex` and is covered with a pillow-case 7. This pillow-case is provided with a ruie 8, constituting a border, and mounted upon the rufiie are bands 9, of resilient material, preferably of elastic, to be used as straps for holding the pillow when deflated, rolled, or folded. A pocket 10 is sewed upon the ruffle 8 and by means of stitching 10 is connected with the pillow-case 7. This pocket has a mouth 10b, through which the rubber bag 6 when deflated may be inserted into the pillowcase 7. The rubber bag 6 is provided with a neck 11, having a longitudinal passage 12, and integral with the neck 11 is a tube 13, to which is secured a pneumatic bulb 14, provided with valves 15 16, the bulb and valves together constituting a type of pump. The passage 12 is enlarged at its outer end, and mounted within this portion is a threaded screw 17, provided with a head 18, whereby it may be rotated, and thus check the pressure. The neck 11 is provided witha side passage 19 for the purpose of venting the bag 6.
Fig. 2 is a ver- The operation of my device is as follows: The operator passes his hand into the pocket 10 by raising the loose edge or mouth 1()b from the pillow-case 7 and turns the screw 17 so as to open communication between the bulb 14 and the rubber bag 6 by way of the passage 12. He neXt operates the pump, or, in other words, grasps the bulb 14 with his hand and alternately squeezes and relaxes the same. The pum p forces air in the rubber bag 6, thereby inflating the same to a proper degree of tension. The operator thereupon tightens the screw 17 by means of the head 18, and this leaves the pillow inflated. When it is desired to deflate the pillow, this is accomplished by merely turning the screw 17 in the reverse direction. If it be desired to fold the pillowas, for instance, for purposes of travel-it is deflated, bent across the middle, the outer edges of the ruffle tucked under, as indicated in Fig. 4, and then rolled from the end, so as to leave the bands 9 upon the outside.v These bands are next stretched over the roll thus formed, and the device has the appearance indicated in Fig. 5. This may be done either with or without removing the bulb 14.
It will be noted that the pump is a portable affair forming practically a part of the pillow and is preferably left in position while in use. VIt will also be noted that when the pillow is in use. the pump is concealed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters PatentM 1. The combination of a rubber bag provided with a neck, said neck having a vent, a pump connected with said neck, and a screw for opening and closing communication between said pump and said rubber bag and also for venting said rubber bag.
2. In a pneumatic pillow or the like, the combination of an inilatable rubber bag, a pillow-case connected thereto and provided with a pocket and with means for enabling the operators hand to be readily inserted within said pocket, said rubber bag and said pillow-case being adapted to be folded, and a hand-pump connected with said pocket and with said rubber bag.
3. In a pillow or the like, the combination of an inflatable rubber bag, a hand-pump connected therewith, and a pillow-case covering said rubber bag and provided with a portion normally concealing said hand-pump.
4. The combination of a rubber bag, a pillow-case enveloping the same and having a pocket, said pocket being provided with an opening for the operators hand, and a handpump disposed within said pocket and connested with said rubber bag.
5. The combination of a pillow-ease provided with a body portion and with a pocket communicating directly with said body portion, a rubber bag enveloped in said body portion and provided with a neck extending into said pocket, the arrangement being such that said rubber bag may be removed from said body portion of said pillow-case by being passed through said pocket, and a pump LOUIS FERDINAND DOELLINGER.
