Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1905.
Application filed January 21 1904- Serial No. 189,989.
T 0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gromwell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a Primer, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a primer for cartridges in which the head of the cap is so constructed as to effect an explosion of the fulminate upon the impact of the firing-pin and without the employment of a separate piece or anvil.
A further object of the invention is to construct the head of the cap or primer in such manner as to protect the same against accidental discharge.
A further object of the invention is to provide a primer or fulminating-cap which shall be simple in construction, may be cheaply manufactured, and will be effective in use.
I/Vith the above objects in view the invention consists of a primer or fulminating-cap the head of which is provided centrally with an outwardly-projecting portion forming an inner cavity and terminating in a point and said projecting portion located within. a surrounding thick wall and within the plane of the same, all as hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an enlarged sectional view of a primer constructed in accordancewith my invention Fig. 2 is a plan view looking at the head of the cap. Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating a slight modification of the invention wherein the projecting portion is shaped to provide straighter walls than shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view showing the application of the fulminate to the cap.
At the outset it will be understood that though I have herein illustrated my invention as applied to a primer or fulminatingcap obviously the same is applicable also to such cartridges in which the primer is formed as a part thereof and also that the cap may or maynot have the usual flange at the closed end thereof.
In carrying out my invention and as shown in the drawings the cap A, having the usual flange a, is provided at the center of the head (4' thereof with an annular recess or countersink (Z, forming an outwardly-projecting portion 6, the latter having an inner cavity, as
b, and against this outwardly-projecting portion the firing-pin is adapted to strike to explode the fulminate therein. It is preferred that the projecting portion 6 terminate in a point, as 5 so that the firing-pin may strike a glancing blow and result in grinding the fulminate against the walls of the projection,
and inasmuch as the end of a firing-pin is rounded such a blow will be' struck in the majority of instances. However, it is not essential that a glancing blow be struck upon the projection, inasmuch as a direct blow upon the point would result in crushing the projection and grinding the fulminate therein against the walls at the inner end thereof.
That part of the head of the cap A which forms the projection is of thin metal, while the part surrounding the countersink (Z, including the flange a, when the latter is used, is thick, and this surrounding thick wall serves to protect the primer against accidental explosion. The outer end or point of the projection b is below the plane of the outer surface of the surrounding thick wall of the head, and the countersink being comparatively small the projection is not liable to be struck should the cartridge fall to the ground.
In completing the primer a very sensitive priming material (0, Fig. 4) is placed in the cap to fill the cavity 6 and extend into the body of the cap, a less sensitive priming material or detonating powder, as 0, being added, and then a coat of varnish, as 0 to protect the powder.
In the modification Fig. 4. the projection, as e, is made comparatively straight and the walls of the cavity of said projection are correspondingly straight.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A primer, comprising a shell or cap, as A, the head or end wall a of which is comparatively thick and provided externally with a recess, as cl, and a teat 5 formed integrally with the head or end wall and projecting from the central portion of the base of the aforesaid recess, said teat being within the plane of the outer surface of the head or end wall and adapted to receive a sensitive fulminate.
2. A primer, comprising a shell or cap, as A, the head or end wall a of which is provided externally with a recess, and a teat I) projecting from the base of said recess and lying within the plane of the outer surface of the head of the cap or shell, said teat having thin Walls and adapted to receive a sensitive fulminate.
3. A primer, comprising a shell or cap, as A, the head or end Wall of which is provided externally With a recess, and an integral teat b projecting from the base of said recess and having thin Walls, said teat being closed at its outer end and lying entirely Within the plane of the outer surface of the head or end Wall of the cap and adapted to receive a sensitive fulminate.
4:. A primer, comprising a shell or cap, as A, the head or end Wall of which is thickened and provided externally With a central recess,
a tapered projection or teat 6 projecting from the center of the base of the recess and closed at its outer end, said teat having thin Walls and being entirely within the plane of the outer surface of the head or end Wall of the cap and adapted to receive a fulminate, substantially as shoWn and for the purpose set forth.
