Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. CONANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cadillac, in the county of Wexford and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Pole-Tip Attachment for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved attachment for the poles of vehicles, the object of said attachment being to cooperate with the holdback-iron for the purpose of retaining the neck-yoke in position when adjusted upon the tip of the pole and also to prevent the lines from becoming entangled with the pole or with the neck-yoke.

ith these and other ends in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the sameconsists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that the right is reserved to any changes, alterations, and modifications to which recourse may be had within the scope of the invention and without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the efliciency of the same.

In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the tip end of a vehicle-pole having the improved attachment applied thereto and showing a neck-yokein operative position, said neckyoke being also shown in dotted lines in the position which it occupies while being placed upon or detached from the pole. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved device or appliance detached.

The improved device or appliance is preferably constructed of resilient wire of suitable gage, a suitable length of such wire being flattened at the ends thereof, as shown at l 1. The piece of wire is then doubled upon itself or bent, as shown at 2, and the side members 3 3 near the bent portion are bent transversely of said bent portion, as shown at 4, to form an upstanding hook member 5. The side members 3 3 are further bent intermediate of their ends, as shown at 6, so that the flattened end portions shall lie in the same vertical planes as but spaced from the body portions of the side members 3 3. The flattened portions 1 1, which are adapted to fit against the sides of the tip of a wagon-pole 7, are provided with perforations 8 for the passage of bolts, rivets, or other fastening means.

The pole-tip 7 is provided in the usual manner with the holdback-iron 9, having a depending member 10, adapted to engage the ring 11 of the neck-yoke 12.

' WVhen the improved appliance has been attached to the tip of a wagon-pole, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, the hook member 5 will lie behind and be slightly spaced from the depending portion or hook member 11 of the holdback-iron, said hook member 11 being, if desired, permitted to extend between the side members of the appliance. In order to place the neck-yoke in position, it is first held in an inverted position beneath the poletip, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus permitting the ring 11 to be slid along between the hooked portion of the appliance and the hook member 11 of the holdbackiron and forwardly of the latter until the tip of the pole is nearly reached, when the neckyoke may be carried over the pole-tip and moved back to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1. It is obvious that when the neckyoke is in this position and is connected with the harness there is no possibility of its becoming disengaged from the pole-tip, while at the same time the side members of the improved appliance will so guide the lines as to positively prevent their entanglement with the pole-tip or with the neck-yoke.

The improved device which constitutes this invention is simple, inexpensive, and easily applied, and it may at a trifling expense be applied to the tips of vehicle-poles of any ordinary construction.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A neck-yoke-engaging appliance for poletips comprising a pair of tip-engaging side members extended downwardly and rearwardly and terminating in an upturned hook member.

2. A neck-yoke-engaging appliance for poletips comprising a pair of tip-engaging side members extended downwardly and rearwardly and terminating in a connected upturned portion.

3. The combination with a pole having a holdback-iron, of a neck-yoke-engaging appliance comprising pole-tip-engaging side members extended downwardly and rearwardly adjacent to the holdback-hook and terminating in an upturned hook member adjacent to and in rear of the holdback-hook.

4. The combination with a pole having a holdback-iron, of a neck-yoke-engaging appliance consisting of a rod or wire having flattened end portions engaging the sides of the pole-tip, and a bent hook-shaped body disposed beneath the pole-tip and adjacent to the holdback-hook.

5. A neck-yoke-engaging appliance for poletips consisting of a resilient hook having side members the extremities of which are extended rearwardly in the direction of the point of the hook.

6. A neok-yoke-engaging appliance for poletips consisting of a resilient hook having side members the extremities of which are extended rearwardly in the direction of the point of the hook, spaced from the latter, and having flattened apertnred pole-tip-engaging extremities.
