To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN J. BRAZNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement tom is composed of a main or stationary sec' tion and one or more folding sections, the folding sections being held horizontally and substantially in line with the main section when the device is used as a bed and being folded upwardly to a position substantially at right angles to the plane of the main section when not in use as a bed.

The object of my invention is to provide a folding bed of this type in which the legs may be folded substantially parallel with the main section of the bed-bottom frame, thus enabling me to place the entire device in a favorable position for shipping and storing, so that it occupies little room.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate two forms of folding bed made in accordance with my invention, and in which like characters of reference refer to similar parts in the difierent views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my folding bed in extended position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same when folded. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section through one of the folding portions of the bed. Fig. a is a side elevation of the bed when folded for shipping or storage. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the bed in extended position. Fig. 6 is a side elevation, when folded for shipment,of a slightly-modified form of my invention adapted, when not in use as a bed, for use as a sofa; and Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the bed shown in Fig. 6 in position for use as a sofa.

Referring first to Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, 10 indicates the side rails of the center or main portion of the bed-bottom frame. 11 indicates the side rails of the folding sections, which are hinged at 12 to the side rails 10 of the main section. 13 indicates the end rails of the main section, and 14 the end rails of the folding sections. 15 indicates head and foot boards, hinged at 16 to the outer ends of the folding sections and normally fastened in position by means of the braces 17, pivoted at one end to the rails 11 and fastened by bolts 18 at their opposite ends to the head and foot boards 15. 19 indicates legs pivotally'connected at 20 to the rails 11 of the folding sections of the frame, and 21 are legs pivotally connected at 12 to the rails 10 of the main section. The braces 22, pivoted to the rails 10, are detachably fastened to the legs 21 to hold the same in position when the bed is set up for use. 25 indicates links pivotally connected to the legs 19 and 21, as best shown in Fig. 1. The legs 19 at each side of the bed are connected together by a cross-piece 26, strengthened by braces 27,. as best shown in Fig. 3.

In Figs. 6 and 7 but one folding section of the bed-bottom frame is provided, and a fastening device 28 is pivoted to the rail 10 of the main bed-bottom section and detachably fastened at 29 to the rail 11 of the folding section to hold the folding section in a substantially vertical position when it is desired to use the bed as a sofa. In other respects the construction of the device shown in these figures is substantially the same as that de- .may be extended, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5,

to form a bed or may be folded up, as shown in Fig. 2, when not in use as a bed. When it is desired to ship or store the same, the braces 22 are detached from the legs 21, and the legs 19 and 21, being pivotally connected by the links 22, may be folded down to a position approximately parallel with the rails 10 and 11. The head and foot boards 15 and braces 17 may also be folded down into a position parallel with the bed- bottom rails 10 and 11 by detaching the braces at the nuts 18. \Vhen the folding section or sections are folded to a vertical position when out of use as a bed, as shown in Fig. 2, or in use as a sofa, as shown in Fig. 7, the legs 19 also fold into a plane parallel with said folding section or sections.

The operation of the form of my invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is readily understood and is substantially the same as that described above.

The combination with a bed-bottom frame comprising a stationary main portion and a portion folding upwardly relative to said main portion, of a folding leg secured to the folding portion, a second folding leg carried by said main portion, a link unconnected with said frame and pivotally connected with said legs, and means for fastening one of said legs in position.

The combination with a bed-bottom frame comprising a main portion and a portion folding upwardly relative to said main portion, of a folding leg secured to said main portion, a second folding leg carried by the folding portion, a link pivotally connected with said legs, and means connected with said frame for fastening one-of said legs in position.

The combination with a bed-bottom frame comprising a main portion and a folding portion, of a folding leg secured to said main portion, a second folding leg carried by said folding portion, a link pivotally connected with said legs, and means connected with said main portion for fastening one of said legs in position.

6. The combination with a bed-bottom frame comprising a stationary main portion and two movable portions folding upwardly relative to said main portion, of a pair of inwardlyfolding legs, one of which is secured to said main portion and the other to one of said movable portions, a link unconnected with said frame and pivotally connecting said legs together, a second pair of in wardly-folding legs, one of which is secured to said main portion and the other to the other of said movable portions, a second link also unconnected with said frame and connecting said second pair of legs together, and means for securing one leg of each pair in position.

7. The combination with a bed-bottom frame comprising a main portion and a portion folding upwardly relative to said main portion, of a folding leg secured to said main portion, a second folding leg carried by the folding portion, a link pivotally connected with said legs, and a folding headboard carried by said folding portion.
