Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it 771/607] concern:
Be it known that we, LEMUEL D. GILL and PEETER C. TITUs, citizens of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of Barbour and State of est Virginia, have invented a new and useful Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hose or pipe couplings of the class known as instantaneous or quick-action, and has for its object to simplify and improve the construction and increase the strength and efliciency without adding to the cost of production.
lVith these and other objects in view,which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the two parts of the coupling disconnected. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the threaded member.
The improved device comprises two tubular members (represented as a whole, respectively, at 10 11) and each having means at one end, as at 12 13, for connecting to the hose, (represented at 14 15.) The member 10 is enlarged at its free end, as at 16, and provided with a circular longitudinal recess 17 in the enlarged portion and with a double screw-thread 18 in the outerend of the recess. The end of the enlargement 16v is also provided with two oppositely-disposed bolt-sockets 19 20, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The member 11 is designed to closely lit the recess 17 at its free end 21 and is provided with an intermediate enlargement 22 for bearing against the adjacent end of the enlargement 16 of the member 10 when the coupling action is completed. The portion 21 is provided With oppositely-disposed radial lugs 23 24 for simultaneously entering the two threads 18 and engaging the same when the members are reversely rotated to the recess 17 without reference to the location of the lugs 23 24, and then when thus entered and rotated the lugs will enter the double threads at the same time, and the bolt 25 will enter the first'of the sockets 19 or 20 it reaches, so that it will never be required to rotate the members a greater distance than one-half a revolution and generally much less than one-half. A flexible packing 26 will be disposed in the bottom of the recess 17, against which the end of the portion 21 of the member 11 will bear. By this arrangement the entering portion 21 being relatively long and closely fitting the correspondingly-long recess 17 produces a very firm rigid coupling. effectually.preventing lateral or deflecting movement, While the coaction of the studs 23 24 and the double threads 18 firmly binds the members longitudinally.
The formation of the device produces relatively large abutting shoulders at the ends of the members 1O 11, thus materially increasing the strength of the coupling and correspondingly decreasing the chances for disarrangement of the parts or of their Working loose.
WVith the hose equal in diameter to the enlargements of members 10 11 the coupling otherwise roughly used. None of the more delicate parts are therefore exposed to be displaced by contact with the ground, thus materially increasing the durability of the device.
By this arrangement of the parts two very important results are accomplished: First, the act of coupling may be very quickly made, as it requires only that the part 21 shall be entered into the part 17 without reference to its position and then rotated never more than one-half a revolution or until the bolt 25 snaps into one of the sockets 19 or 20, as the case may be. Then the uncoupling may be just Second, the strains are borne equally at both sides, thus obviating all side strains and insuring the maintenance of a much closer union between the parts.
The device can be adapted for any size of hose or to hose used for any purpose and may be of any desired metal.
' Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- A hose-coupling comprising a female member having one end adapted for connection with a hose and its other end enlarged and provided with internal double threads and its face formed with alined sockets, and a male member having one end adapted for connection with a hose and its other end reduced to fit within the enlarged head of the female memher and provided with angularly-disposed lugs to engage the threads, the male member being further provided With an enlargement of the same diameter as that of the female member and adapted to abut thereagainst, and being provided with a longitudinal socket disposed parallel With the Wall of the bore of the coupling and intersected by a recess in the enlargement, the two enlargements being of the same diameter as the external diameter of the hose, thereby to prevent the presentation of an enlargement in the hose at the point Where the coupling is located, a spring-pressed bolt secured within the socket, a thumb-piece secured to the bolt and working in the recess and having its head disposed below the plane of the enlargement to protect it from injury, and a resilient gasket interposed between the reduced end of the male member and the interior Wall of the female member.
