FOLDING STOOL. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 16,1906.
U TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FOLDING STOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed November 16, 1905. Serial No. 287.675.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HUrToN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Stools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a folding stool, and is particularly useful in seating a third person in a vehicle that has been designed for seating only two persons.
The object of the invention is to provide a stool that may be'folded so as to be readily packed in the box-seat of the vehicle, but which may be spread out and placed on the cushion of the vehicle-seat, so as to enable a third person to be seated.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which F i ure 1 illustrates a stool and a portion of a ve icle-body with my improved folding seat in position for use. Fig. 2 shows a front elevation of the improved folding stool. Fig. 3 illustrates a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 4 shows an enlarged sectional detail on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
The stool comprises two metal frames which are pivoted together and to which the flexible material is attached. Each frame has a central flat portion 1 with lateral extensions 2 and 3, which project from opposite sides of said flat portion. The bottom surface of the extension 2 forms a stopshoulder 4 at one side of the central portion, while the top surface of the extension 3 forms a stop-shoulder 5 at the opposite side of the central portion. It will thus be seen that the central portion has a stop-shoulder at each side which face in opposite directions.
From the downwardly-facing shoulders 4 the frames have upwardly-projecting curved arms 6, which are connected at their upper ends by a cross-bar 7, and from the upwardly-facing shoulders 5 the frames are each provided with downwardly and outwardly curved legs 8, whose lower ends are connected to a flat base-bar 9. A bolt 10 passes through the central flat portions 1 and pivotally holds them together. A lug 11 is provided on the upper edge of the fiat portion of one frame, and a pawl 12 has one end pivoted to said lug, while the opposite end of said pawl has a lateral extension 13, which projects over and in front of a lug 14 on the edge of the flat portion of the other frame, so as to keep the two frames spread apart. A seat 15 of some suitable flexible fabric is attached to the cross-bars 7 at the upper ends of the two frames on which the person sits.
By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that when the stool is placed 011 the cushion 16 of the vehicle-seat the flat base-bars 9 will rest directly on the cushion, and the legs extending from said base-bars are concave or curved inwardly, so as to extend upwardly and around the limbs of the persons who are seated on the cushion. Thus the stool may be placed on the vehicle-seat between two persons without inconvenience to the latter, and the third person may be seated on the stool in an elevated position.
When the stool is spread or open, the downwardly-facing shoulder 4 of one frame will contact with the upwardly-facing shoulder 5 of the other frame and limit the outward movement of the legs and base-bars, while the pawl 12 and lug 14 will lock the frames in the spread-apart position.
When not in use, the stool may be folded by swinging the base-bars and legs toward each other.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A folding stool having a flexible seat with supporting-frames extending downwardly and inwardly from opposite sides of the seat and pivoted together at a single point in a central vertical plane and from said pivot-point said frames extending downwardly and outwardly.
2. A folding stool comprising two frames each having a central flat portion, said portions overlapping each other and having at one side of said portions legs which. extend downwardly and diverge or spread, and at the other side arms which extend upward and diverge or spread, and a single bolt through said overlapped portions and servin as a pivot which unites the two frames.
in testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. I-IUTTON,JR.
