Be it known that I, LOUIS SHoLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of .Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in riype Vriters, of .which the following a specification, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The main object of this invention is to shift the pivots or fulcrums of type-bars, each having a plurality of type for printing different characters by the manipulation of the keys employed to produce the impression of the type upon the platen.
It consists in certain novel features of conpeculiar arrangement combinations of parts hereinafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings like letters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a type-writer embodying the invention, certain parts being broken away and shown in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section on the line 2 2,'F1gl, and Flg. 3 1s a horlzontal section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.

A bar or rod t', pivoted at its rear end to a depending arm of the shifting lever c, is pivoted at its iront end to the lower end ot a link w, which is in turn pivoted at its upper end on or in line with the pin s in the upper guide o. The lower end of this link has pins or projections a: loosely embracing the key-stein q and causing it to impart its lateral mover/nent to the bar or rod e and the shifting lever e. A. spring y, connecting the bar or rod c with the lsupport g, tends to retract the key and its stein into and to hold them in their normal printing position, in which the stem stands vertically, as shown in Fig. 1.
