Description

e) wam, t .y a, tv Q o i l te @Halimi tant @anni @ffm/-A www FELIX WALKER, or New ORLEANS, LOUISIANA..
Letters .Patent No. 84,031, dated November 10, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT SASH-STOP AND HOLDER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent an. making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Bc it known that I, FELIX WALKER, of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Lou isiana, have invented anew and improved Mode of Securing Sash into WindowFrames, and with an improved device to automatically hold a sash at any height desired, and also to lock both lower and upper sash, by merely elevating or lowering the same.
By the use of my invention, sash will work with more ease, and be incre securely and easily fastened than any other Inode heretofore used, and will supersede the use of cords and weights to sash, will be cheap and easy of application, and. withal very durable and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters marked thereon, similar 'letters referring to corresponding parts, making a part of this specification, in which- Figiu'e l is a perspective View of a window, and showing a part of my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section, enl. rged to a working-size, of part cfa window-frame and sash, showing part of my improvement.
Figure 3 is a transverse section, showing part of a window-frame and two sash, as held by my improvement.
Figure 4 represents my improved bobi or sashcatch.
The nature of my improvement consists in providing and attaching, to either side of a window-frame, metallic stops or ways, made ot'cast or wrought-iron, or of any other suitable material, and to provide, of iron,` brass, or any other suitable material, a'somewhat V-shaped bob7 or catch, and pivot the same through a slot cut horizontally through the upiight frame of a window-sash, the arms of the said bob to alternately engage notches on themetallic ways, attached to the window-frame.
To enable others skilled in the art to malte and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I make, of cast or wrought-iron, or of any other suitable material, stops or ways;7 from one to two inches wide, or of any other width desired, and about oueeighth to one-quarter (it to of an inch thick, with hanged edges, made at right angles with the width of the metallic stops or ways,7 say, about one-quarter to three-eighths to of an inch high. On the edges of the flanges, I cut shallow and curved bottom notches. (See A, in tig. 2.) rDoeither side of a window-frame, Iattach, with screws s. the metallic stops or ways A.
On the outer edge of the side or upright part of a sash-frame, I cut, with a suitable tool, grooves to receive and engage the llanges-7 on the metallic stops or ways A, as seen at A and B, g. A3, the lower sash to engage one of the flanges, and the upper sash the other llange. Thus, both sash to run on the stop or way, as seen at figs. 2and 3.
I make, of iron, brass, or any other suitable material,
a bob or catch, with two arms, somewhat V-shaped,
while the other arm of the bob or catch will he so exposed or presented that it can be operated on by the hand, when it is desired to move the sash up or down, thus completing the sash-fastener, so as to automattcally lock the sash when it is down, and also to stay the' same at any point as it is being hoisted. which can be done with the use of only one hand.
The metal stops or ways A, when attached to the window-frames, are not intended to reach quite to the window-sill, by, say, about one inch, in order to prevent the collection of water, dust, or other substance in the corners of the window.
A represents the metallic stops or ways, with the flanges and notches cut on same.
B represents part of thcwindow-sash.
C represents the metallic bob or catch.
S represents the screws attaching the metal stops or ways to the window-frame.
f represents the flanges on the metal stops `or ways7 A.
n represents notches cut on the anges.
p represents pivots passing through the sash and metallic bob or catch C.
NVh at I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the double-flanged plate A, with notches n n, and securedto the inner side of the window-frame, with the pivoted catch C, having two arms, one being weighted, as shown, all operating as set forth.
FELIX WALKER.
