,Be it known that 1, JAMES H. Foorn, tinne1', of Pittsfield, in, the county of Berkshire,- and State of Massachusetts, have made and invented a new and useful Candle-Gap; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and manner of using the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-.-

Figure 1 is a plan or top elevation;

Figure 3,9. side elevation of the same, as applied to a candle; and

Figure 4, a vertical section of the same through line w-:::, as applied to a candle.

The object of my invention is to provide a cap for common tallow, wax, or spermaceti candles, of such a nature as to prevent the same from melting and running down on one side faster than at other points, and further, to prevent the casual dropping of melted tallowlor want on floors, carpets, 850., when lighted candlesare suddenly moved or carried rapidly from place In practising. y invention, I providea light metallic ferrule, q, half an inch in length, or thereabouts, and of ,a diameter-a little greater than that of-an ordinary,

candle, and I contract such ferrule slightly at the .top, as seen in figs. 3 and 4.

I also provide a thin annular flange-rest, b, and attach the same to theinside of ferrule a, near the top thereof, as seen infig. 4, the inner edge of such flangerest being bent, curved, or inclined downwards;

'The, opening through flange-rest b, I make about half an inch in diameter, or something less than that of an ordinary candle.

Thus constructed, I place the cap on top of the candle d, the wick, c, of which projects through and above ferrule a and flange-rest b. The flange-rest b supports the ferrule u always the same relative position to the light, and both together prevent the uneven melting and wasting of the candle, and also the casual dropping of the melted wax or tallow.

Thus having described my invention,

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A- candle-cap, a, when provided with an annular flange-rest b, in the form and manner described, as a new article of manufacture.
