Be it known that I HENRY R. WooDwARD, I
of the city, county, and State of New York, have` invented a new and Improved Nostril- Expander, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. v

I have found that with many people the tendency while breathing is for thenostrils to collapse morevor less or'at Aleast become somewhat restricted so as to interfere with breathing. This lis particularly true when people are engaged in athletic sports-such as running, racing, or any effort which requires a large supply of air to the lungs- -and in such exercises t e tendency is to open the mouth, thus admitting impurities and also causing the mouth to dry quickly. l have found also that the habit of snoring is caused largely by this constriction of the nostrils, or atleast l struct the device so that it can do no in'ury,

While I do not limit myself to the particular or recise form shown, still it is better to ma e it as illustrated, andhere the structure has a point or bridge 10 in Fig. 3, or 10a in Fig. 4, which straddles the cartilage of the nose, and from this point the members divergeslightly, asf'shown at 11, and are then bent upward and rearward, as at 12,-, so as to follow the normal contour of the nostril, the said members l12 being bent over gradually and returned upon themselves, as shown at 13, and finally terminating in inturned bends 14. lt will be seen that this arrangement forms a springy loop more or less elongated for entering each nostril, and as the loo s are connected no injury can be done, Whi e the bends 14 enable the device to be easily withdrawn: without the possibility of the parts catching into the-skin.
It will be seen that the principle of the invention consists in providing the springy loo s which will prevent the nostrils from coliapsin'g and 'in connecting the loops so that they cannot extend-inward too far and can be easily and instantly withdrawn. It is necessary, however, to have the loops rather long, so that they will extend back into the nasal cavity of the hea-d, and they should lie in a geierally horizontal direction, with the connecting-bridge 1 1 bent down, so as to straddle the cartilage of the nose.
