Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14,1907.

' Cover Oans or Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to open mouth friction cover cans or vessels of the kind having no annular upper head or top to receive the friction cap or cover.
My invention consists in the novel construction of parts and-devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described, and more particularly set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in vertical section, of a can or vessel embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the cover showing the lip projecting from the lower edge of the cover flange before it is folded up againstthe cover flange and secured at its free end thereto; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a modification. Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate still further modifications.

The sealing disk or gasket C may be of any suitable material preferably of pasteboard or paper, suitably prepared.
The lower head or-bottom B may be secured to the can body by any suitable kind of seam, soldered or otherwise.
The friction cover D has a deep flange cl surrounding, embracing and tightly engaging the upper portion of the can body, so that when the cover is driven or forced home on the can body this flange will, by its tight frictional grip, hold the sealing disk or gasket pro erly'compressed and thus effect a tight and secure closure of the can. The flange d of the cover D has a severance (1 preferably a simple slit, extending across the same at one point of its circumference, and the flange d is also provided with a bridge piece (Z secured thereto at one side of the severance d, and preferably formed integral with the cover flange d, and projecting from'the lower edge of said cover flange and extending longitudinally thereof across the severance and adapted to be detachably secured at its other or free end to the cover flange cl on the opposite side of the severance (1 so that by detaching this bridge piece the cover flange may expand and loosen on the body of the vessel, thus permitting the cover to be removed. This bridge piece d when formed integral with the cover flange, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, is folded up against the cover flange, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, from the position illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, the fold being indicated at d", and its free end then secured to the cover flange d on the opposite side of the severance d by any suitable securing means. The securing means indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 consists of an integral lip d on the cover flange d which is inserted through a suitable slot (1 in the free end (1 of the bridge piece d The securing means for the free end of the bridge piece (V, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, consists in solder d the free end d of the bridge piece (1 being preferably furnished with a hole d to facilitate the soldering.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the bridge piece (1 instead of being made integral with the cover flange d, is
formed in a separate piece, and may, if de sired, be detachably secured at both ends to the cover flange cl. either by lips d, as illustrated in Fig. 5,or by solder (1 as illustrated in Fig. 6. As illustrated in Fig. 6 the bridge piece d is preferably furnished with an upward extension (1, which is bent down over the top of the cover and which, when straightened out, will aid in detaching the bridge piece or clip (1 preparatory to opening the can or vessel.
If desired the wall of the friction cover D may be furnished with a small vent opening d, to permit air to escape from the interior of the can while the friction cover is being forced home thereon, this vent opening being sealed or. closed by the sealing disk or gasket O when the cover is forced completely home.
I claim:
1 In an open mouth friction cover can or vessel, the combination with an open mouth body, of a sealing disk or gasket and a friction cover having an integral flange surrounding and embracing the upper portion of the body, and furnished with a severance extending across the same, and with a bridge piece extending across said severance and detachably secured at one end to said cover flange, substantially as specified.
2. In an open mouth friction cover can or vessel, the combination with an open mouth body, of asealing disk or gasket and a friction cover having a flange surrounding the body and provided with a severance across said flange, and with an integral bridge piece projecting from the lower edge of the cover flange and folded up against the cover and extending across said severance, and having its free end detachably secured to the cover flange, substantially as specified.
3. In an open mouth friction cover can or vessel, the combination with an open mouth body, of a sealing disk or gasket and a friction cover having a flange surrounding the body and provided with a severance across said flange, and with an integral bridge piece projecting from the lower edge of the cover flange and folded up against the cover and extending across said severance, and having its free end detachably secured to the cover flange, the cover flange having an integral lip for detachably securing the free end of said bridge piece thereto, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with an open mouth body, of a friction cover therefor having an integral flange furnished with a severance across the same, and provided with an integral bridge piece projecting from the lower edge of the cover flange at one side of said severance and extending across said severance, and having its free end detachably secured to the cover flange, substantially as specified.
5. A friction cover for open mouth cans or vessels, having an integral flange, a severance across the flange and a detachable bridge piece extending across the severance in the flange, said bridge piece being integral with the cover flange and projecting from the lower edge of the cover flan e and folded up against the same, substantia ly as specified.
