OUTLET-BOX.
' I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1 907.
Application filed February 7, 1906, Serial No. 299.955. I
all whom it may concern.-
1 Be it known that I, LOUIE T. LA PAUGH, a citiaen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Outlet-Boxes; and I do clear, and exact description of the invention,.
novel manner of'fastening the cover to the box, involving a saving of and PIOVIdlIlg a secure and abor and material inexpensive fastening means, doing awaywith inwardly or outwardly bent formed upon junction boxes and which are. frequently liable to break off;
ffdrawing a box out ears which are commonly In order to make steel drawn boxes with ears bent at right angles to the wall of the box, a' very ductile and high grade steel must be used, and in'so doing, the operation of blanking and drawing a box without heating or reheating, hardensthe steel to such a degree that it is very. difiicult to bend the arts of thebox at ri ht angles to the sides without breakage, for tile reason that the operation of of one piece of steel will necessarily destroy or weaken the fiber of the metal, thereby weakening the cars at the point of bending, and it is the aim of the pres ent invention to produce a box without any inwardly or outwardly extending lugs, to obviate thesejobjections. i
-More specifically, the present invention contemplates the provision of a fastening means for covers consisting of screw-eyes which have threaded connection with apertures in the bottom of the box, while the ,shank portion of the screwextends through an aperture or slot in the cover, while the eye of" the screw projecting beyond forms means whereby the same may be securely anchored to the plastering of a wall.
The invention consists further in other details of construction which will be hereinafter the cover,
fully described and then specifically defined in theappended claims.
I illustrate my invention in-the accome 'panying drawings, in which 2- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an outlet box made In accordance with my invention. F 1g. 2 isa perspective view showing the cover and the box disassembled. Fig. 3 is a percover and box illustrated in Fig. 5, with. the
parts disassembled.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a circular-outlined outlet box having the usual openings B therein which contain plugs adapted to be removed for the recep'tionof conduit wires, and C dcsignatesthe cover. of the box which has the angled lugs D turned in from the marginal edge thereof and adapt ed to. outlet box to hold the same from lateral movement. Said cover is provided with one or more slots F cut in from the edges thereof preferably at locations diametrically oppo site, and threaded apertures G are formed in 8 5 the bottom of the box and adapted to receive the screw-eyes H. I Referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings, will be seen a square-outlined outlet box having a plurality of angled lugs'D formed about the 9 edge thereof and designed to enga e the inner surface of the sidewall of the box to prevent lateral play of the cover, and said cover is provided with slots F, as before described, and the bottom of the box is provided with threaded apertures G the screws H.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings is illustrated a detail showin an angled lug I) about the circumference of outer surface of the box instead of the inner, and in Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown an angled 4 lip Kfformed about the marginal edge of the cover and engaging a slot N formed in the wall of the box while a portion of. cover opposite is provided with the slot F to receive the shank portion of the screw II.
In adjusting the cover to the box, the lugs upon one edge of the cover are inserted in to receive the box and made to bearagainst-the inner surface of the surrounding wall, the eyes of the screwbeing first turned so that they will pass Fig. 5 65 bear against the inner surface-of thelSo the cover-as engaging the K00 the box 5 through the slots formed at locations diametrically opposite in the eover. The cover thus resting upon the box with the heads of the screws passing through said slots, the never may then be securely held by turning the screws so-that the eyes will be crosswise of the slots and hearing against the opposite walls thmeof. The lugs E upon the circumference of the Cover hearing against the wail of the box will serve to hold the same from lateral movement, while the screws holding the cover securely to the box with the eyes projecting beyond the cover, form means for anehora 'e in the plastering'of a Wall.
What; claim is:- Y
1. An outlet box having threaded aper extending through said apertures, and held by the threads of the latter and a cover having slots through which said fastening means pass, as set forth. 2. An ,outlet' box having threaded apertures in the bottom thereof, serew-eyes-, threaded portions of which are fitted in said 1 r. I l tures 1n the bottom thereof, fastening means i threaded apertures, and a eover having slots therein adapted to reeeive said serews, the eyes at the ends of said'sorews adapted to he. turned transversely across said slots to hold the cover upon the box, as set forth.
3. An outlet box having threaded apex? tures in the bottom thereof, serewyes fitted in said apertures, a cover having slots formed in, the edge thereof adapted to reeeive said screws, and lugs'i'o rmed about the circumference of the cover and adapted. to
engage the wall of the holgthe eyes of said serewsdesigned to be turned crosswise of said slots to engage and hold the cover in lace and serving an anchorage means to hold the box in the plastering of a Wall, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto alhx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
