To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, LEwIs M. McCoRMIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing in Manhattan, county of New York, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful .Improvements in Lantern: Slides and Mats Therefor, of which the following is a specification, reference being had herein to the accompanying drawings, in which I Fi ure 1 is a view of the two sections of the mat separated; Figs. 2 and 3 detail views showing. the manner of adjusting the mat sections to secure mat openings of different dimensions; and Ti 4 a view showing the mat applied to a s ide. Fig. 5 is a. sectional view on the line VV of Fig. 4.

This latter form of mat is used .by those -makers of lantern slides who have suflicient artistic talent to select either the most artistic part of the diapositive 'or the part containing the matter of interest which'is to be shown on the screen. It will be readily understood that it requires a great deal of careful work to measure off the desired opening, and to cut out the mat so that the corners and edges of the opening will be sharp and clean.

It is the main ob'ect of this invention to provide a lantern slide mat which may be readily adjusted to secure an opening of any desired dimensions atany desired point on the slide, and to avoid the necessity of cutting out the-mat.

Another object-of the invention is to provide the mat sections with suitable gage marks and lines by which the mat sections may be accurately adjusted to secure 8. rectangular mat opening.

A further object of the invention is to provide the mat sections. with gage marks or lines by which the assembled mat sections can be arranged on the slide with the margins of the mat opening parallel with thecorresponding edges of the slide.

Referring to the various parts by numerals, 1 designates the sections-of the mat which are 'referably formed of thin opaque'paper or similar -material. There are two. of these sections and the are exact duplicates of As s own in the drawing these sections are L-shaped and each section is provided with longitudinal and transverse gage lines, the longitudinal lines being marked 2 and the transverse gage lines, 3.

In assembling'the sections of the mat the members of the sections are crossed or overlapped as in Figs. '2 and 3, in such a manner as to form a rectangular opening. Where the members of mat sections cross each other the inner marginal edges of one are arranged parallel with the transverse gage lines of the other section. After being thus arranged to form a rectangular opening of the desireddimensions they are to be temporarily or permanently connected together in any suitable manner. formed having a true rectangular opening therein.

The cover glass 4 is then placed over the mat, and a strip 5 of suitable material, preferably opaque paper, is then pasted around the edges of the cover glass and diapositive to permanently connect them together and secure the mat in position.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. A lantern slide mat comprised of a pair of -L-shaped mat sections formed of thin flexible opaque paper having longitudinal and transverse gage marks thereon and adapted to be adjusted on each other and to be pasted together to form a mat having a rectangular opening of the desired dimensions, the'mat sections being arranged according to the transverse gage ma'rks'to secure the rectangular opening and according to the longitudinal gage marks to lace the mat so'that' the margins of the sai opening will be arallel with the corresponding edges of the side lass and to be cured to thefiantern slide.

2. A lantern slide mat com rising a pair of L-shaped mat sections forme of thin opaque paper having parallel transverse gage lines permanently sethereon and adapted to be adjusted on each other and to be connected together where they overlap to form a permanent mat having a rectangular opening of the desired dimensions, the inner mar ins of the one of the mat sections being para lel with the transverse gage lines of the other section to secure the rectangular opening.

3. A lantern slide comprising a diapositive, a pair of L-shaped mat sections formed of thin opaque paper having parallel transverse gage llnes thereon and adapted to be adjusted on each other to form a mat having a rectangular openingthe inner margins of one of the mat sections being parallel with the transverse gage lines of the other section to secure a rectangular opening, a cover glass and a binding strip secured to the edges of the cover glass and the diapositive to secure them together and to hold the mat between them In testimony whereof Ihereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses this 19 day of December 1902 LEWIS M.
