To all whom it may concern.-
l 3e it known that I, VIoToR C. BALDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Telegraph Apparatuses; an I do. declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in-' vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in instructing devices for telegraph operators.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character by means of which the movement of the contact lever of a sounder may be recorded upon a tape or ribbon in such a manner that said record may be transmitted to another sounder.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereniafter described and claimed.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, '1 denotes the recording instrument of the apparatus, said instrument comprising a telegraph key 2 .and a sounder 3 connected therewith, said key and sounder being afiranged ina suitable electric circuit. key 2 1s of the usual or any suitable construction. rovided with the usual switch 4. To one end of the contact levers 7 and connecting the same is secured a su porting frame 8, said frame consisting of suitably mounted cross bars 9 and an 'upwardly projecting yokeshaped brace 10.

On the bolt 17 above and below the end of the guide bar are screwed adjusting nuts 18 which may be screwed in one direction or the other to ad- 'ust the height of the guide plate or bar. he holes through which the olts 17 pass are sufficiently large to permit the guide bar to be shifted laterally or lon itudinally. After the bars have been adjuste and raised to the desired osition, the nuts are tightenedup to hol the same insaid adjusted position.
In' order that the tape 19 may be properly fed to the guide 13, said tape is preferably wound upon a suitably mounted reel 20 arranged at the rear end of the sounder, as shown. At the opposite end of the sounder is arranged a winding reel 2-1, upon which the perforated tape is adapted to be wound.
' The reel 21 is preferably mounted upon the drive shaft 22 of a motor 23. The reel 21 preferably consists of a windin drum 24 avin 'on its inner edge 0 posite y disposed radial y projecting guide gers which guide and retain the ta e upon the periphery of said drum. The runf24 is provided with a hub portion 25, through whic the end of the engagement with the disk 26, thereby yieldingly connecting said drum with the shaft. The pressure of the springs 28 is such that the reel will be held sufficiently tight to per. mit the same to draw the tape through the guide bar of the recording instrument from the reel 20. The connection of the reel 21 with the drive shaft of the motor is not sufficiently tight however to prevent a retrograde 2o movement ofsaid reel in unwinding the tape therefrom.
a The motor 23 may be of any suitable character, the same being here shown and is preferably in the form of a weight motor, by
2 5 means of which a uniform movement will at all times be imparted to the winding reel; the motor will be provided with a suitable governing device (not shown).
- The recording instrument may be operated in connection with a suitable transmitting device, by means ofwhich the characters formed in the tape by said recording instrument may be transmitted to another sounder or series of sounders, for the purpose of instructing students in telegraphy.
By means of a telegraph apparatus constructed and arranged as herein shown and described, all branches of telegraphy such as commercial, rail-road, associated press, race track, etc. may be readily taught.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw- I ings, the constructionand operation of the invention will be readily understood without re uiring a more extended explanation.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In apparatus of the class described, in combinatlon with a perforator and means to move a tape longitudinally and present the same to the actionof the perforator, a tape mde comprising a late having side flanges 6o. orming a channel'fbr the. tape, spring devices to hold the tape against the plate and between the flanges, and means to support and vertically adjust said guide, substantially as described.

4. In a telegraph apparatus of the character described, the combination with a key and sounder, said sounder comprising two electro-magnets each having armatures and contact levers, of a supporting frame connected to and operated by said levers, a perforating instrument carried by said frame, a tape guide arranged beneath said instrument, supporting bolts arranged at the ends of and adapted to pass through enlarged apertures in said ends of the guide, adjusting and securingnuts arranged on said bolts above and below said ends (pf the guide, a reel to contain imperforate tape, a winding reel to receive the tape after bein perforated, and
the same to draw the tape through said guide and to wind said tape upon itself, substantially as described.
