Be it known that I, JosEPH FENNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cynthiana, in the county of Harrison and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse Boots, of which the following is a specification.

This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in horse boots and relates particularly to a quarterboot designed to be secured to a front foot of a horse and to protect the quarter from injury by over-reaching, a boot of this character being particularly useful in speeding horses where an increase of stride isso liable to bring with it an interference between the front and rear hoofs.

In a quarter-boot, the boot is applied to the hoof well down over the heel portion of the shoe, and as a result, the heel portion of the boot is brought into contact with all sorts of substances when the foot is on the ground and in rapid motion is brought against hard substances and is worn off at the bottom and has a tendency to burst open in a short time. The boot,- therefore, soon becomes worthless, although it may be in perfect condition eX-. cept at the bottom and at the heel portion thereof, where the greatest strain and wear occur.

My invention has for its object an improved construction of quarter-boot whereby when the rear or heel portion is worn away at the bottom, the entire boot does not have to be thrown away, but it only becomes necessary to replace a detachable heel strap, the same being accomplished in an expeditious manner, and at a very slight expense.

The invention consists primarily, therefore, in a quarter-boot for horses, provided with an improved construction of detachable heel strap, and the invention further consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts which I shall now hereinafter describe and then particularly point out the novel features 'thereof in the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings .by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of my improved boot, which is shaped to the required form usual with these structures and which is pro-' vided with a comparatively soft leather lin-. ing 2 which is stitched to the body portion and which extends beyond the front and upper edges thereof as'indicated at 3, so as to fit properly around the hoof and the fetlock of the animal. A stra 4 is secured at one end to one portion of t e extension 3 of the lining and is adapted to assist in securing the boot to the hoof by having its other endattached to a buckle 5 secured to an opposite portion ofthe said lining.

The body 1 of the boot is formed at its heel portion with a laterally elongated recess 6, and at each end of said recess a slot 7 is provided, the slots being in alinement with the recess as shown and being preferably formed by upper and lower lines of stitching so as to produce the slots between the outer cover or body and the lining between such lines. The slots open outwardly at the front side ed es of the body 1 as illustrated.

Said strap is provided at each end with an attaching strap, one being designated 9 and the other 10, and the said heel strap 8 passes through a retaining loop 11 of leather or the like, said loop being secured to the body portion at about the middle of the recess 6 by rivets or similar fastening devices and the body portion at the upper edge of the recessesbeing reinforced at its inner wall as indicated at 12. Aloop 13 is secured to the attaching strap 9 by a short buckle connection as shown, and the other attaching strap 10 is adapted to be passed across the hoof and through said loo and then back again and secured to the hue 1e 14 which is attached to the opposite side of the boot.

15 designates a small block of substantially triangular shape riveted to the retain ing loop 11 on the rear side of the latter, said block being formed preferably of heavy leather.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing,,it will be seen that the heel strap 8 is substantially coextensive with the recess 6 in the body 1 of the boot and that it is secured in place where it will receive the greatest amount of wear, and protect the main or body portion of the boot from such wear. Preferably the heel strap is formed of two or more plies of leather and the attaching straps are riveted at their ends between such plies. It is evident that when the heel strap 8 becomes worn, it may be easily detached and replaced by a new one, without the necessity of repairing the entire boot or of replacing it with a new one.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A quarter-boot for horses, comprising a body portion provided at its rear lower edge with a transversely elongated recess, a heel strap adapted to fit in said recess, and means for detachably connecting said heel strap to the'body portion of the boot.

2. A quarter-boot for horses comprising a body portion, a lining secured thereto, said body portion being provided at its rear lower edge with a transversely elongated recess, and the body portion and lining forming slots between them at the ends of said recess, a heel strap adapted to fit in said recess, and attaching straps adapted to be passed through the said slots and designed for connection over the front of the boot, whereby to secure the heel strap to the said body portlOIl.

3. A quarter-boot for horses, comprising a body portion formed at its rear lower edge witha transversely elongated recess, a retaining loop secured to the body portion and extending Within the recess, a heel strap fitted in said recess and extending through said loop, and straps secured to the end of said heel strap and adapted to secure the latter to' the body portion of the boot, in connection with the retaining loop.

4. A quarter-boot for horses, comprising a body portion provided with a transversely elongated recess, a-lining secured to said. body portion, the lining and the bodyportion forming between them slots at the ends of said rcoess, a retaining loop secured to the rear end of the body portion and projecting within said recess, a heel strap extending through said loop and fitting in said recess, attaching straps secured to the ends of said heel strap and passing through said slots, a buckle secured to the body portion of the boot at one front side thereof, and a loop secured to the attaching strap at the opposite side of the boot, the other attaching strap being adapted to be passed through said loop and brought back into engagement with said buckle, as and for the purpose set forth.

5. A quarter-boot for horses'consisting of a body portion formed at its rear lower edge with a transversely elongated recess, a retaining loop secured to said body portion at the middle of said recess, a heel strap extending through said loop and fitting in said recess, means connected to the ends of said strap for securing the strap to the boot, and a block 15 secured to the inner side of said. retaining loop.
