Description

PATBNTED JULY 16, 1907.
I J. A. HODES. COVER FOR BABY CARRIAGES.
- APPLICATION FILED APB..11.1907.
'WITNESSES:
\NVENTOR.
2&6. WZZZ' JOSEPH A. HODES, OF FREMONT, OHIO.
i I COVER FOR BABY-CARRIAGES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1907.
Application filed April 11, 1907. Serial No- 367,624.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. Honns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Cover for Baby-Carriages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to weather shields or protectors particularly intended for use in connection with baby-carriages; and has for its object the pro-vision of a simple and highly efficient article of this class, which is intended to serve both as'a wind and rain shield, whereby a baby riding in the carriage and the coverings and inner parts of the carriage are com pletely protected from the rain, and which is so designed as to be supported by and completely cover the parasol, thereby protecting the delicate parts thereof, and to be suspended therefrom in such man ner as to form a closure for the front and forward side portions of the carriage and at the sametime provide an opening atthe rear portion of the carriage beneath the parasol for the admission of fresh air to the occupant, said opening being adjustable by a raising or lowering of the parasol.
The invention is fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a baby-carriage having the protector comprising my invention covering the same and partially broken away, and Fig. 2 is a similar enlarged view of a portion of the parasolcovering portion of the protector showing a modification of the securing means.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a baby-carriage of any suitable construction, and 2 the parasol, which has the usual knob 3 at its top and is supported by the rod 4 or in any other suitable manner.
The covering or protector forming my invention may be made of any suitable waterproof material, and comprises the hood or parasol-covering portion 5, the front pendent portion 6, which hangs loosely over the forward end of the carriage body and the two side to conform to the general contour of the parasol and is centrally provided with an opening 8 through which the knob 3 of the parasol projects. This opening is tightly closed around the knob by the use of a drawstring 9, or it may be secured by the means disclosed in Fig. 2, which shows the hood slit from the opening, as at 10, and provided with stud and socket buttoning means 11. The rear skirt portion of the hood is made of suitable lengthto extend to the bottom of or below the lace border usually provided on parasols, so that it will not be injured by rain or snow. The front 6 is provided with a window I2 of any suitable transparent material, such, for instance, as celluloid, to enable the cover to be folded or rolled up into compact form when not in use, and each wing 7 has a strap 13 secured to its inner side and carrying a snap or buckle to enable it to engage a ring 14 on the carriage body, thus preventing the wings from being blown outwardly or inwardly by the wind.
It is apparent that I have provided a protector or covering for the carriage and its parasol which is adapted to protect the occupant, and the interior and delicate parts of the carriage from the wind, snow or rain, and which is adjustable relative to the carriage by a raising or lowering of the parasol to provide a larger or smaller opening for the admission of fresh air to the interior, thus enabling an infant to have the benefit of the fresh outdoor air without subjecting it to the injurious effects of stormy or windy weather;
and also that the cover may be rolled or folded into compact form to enable it to be carried in the carriage for ready use in case of emergencies.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
The combination with a babycarriage and parasol, of a protector having a hood part fashioned to fit over the parasol with its skirt hanging loosely therefrom and its forward portion trailing from the parasol and dropping over the front and sides of the carriagebody and its rear portion shortened to provide an opening between it and the upper rear portion of the carriage body to admit air beneath the protector, the size of said opening being regulated by :1 raising or lowering of the parasol, means for securing the protector in position and a window in the front of the protector.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH A. I IODES.
Witnesses C. \V. Owns, CORNELL Scnnmnnu.
