5mm Qatari SAMEPLAOE; AND SAID JAMES WILLIAMSON ASSIGN S HIS, RIGHT TO HIMSELF AND DAVID WILLIAMSON.
Letters Patent No. 87,997, dated Ma/rah 16, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN BREECH-LOADING- ARMS.
The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID WILLIAMSON, of the city and State of New York, have inventedand made a certain new and useful Improvement in Breech-Loading Fire-Arms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein-- 'Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the breech and rear portion of the barrel, with the parts in position for firing the gun;
Figure 2 is a similar view with the breech open;
Figure 3 is a plan, with the breech open, and the Figure 4 is a cross-section at theline a; w, fig. 2.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
I'employ a breech-block, that is lifted at its rear end by a lever, and slidden back, the front end remaining in the recess at the rear of the barrel, and a retractor is attached to the lower part of the breech-block, at the front end, so as to pull out the cartridge case entirely clear of the barrel.
In the drawing 3 represents a portion of the rear part of the barrel, an
b is the tongue, extending down the stock, to unite the same with the stock, as usual.
The recess 0, that is at the rear of and in line with the bore of the gun, is either formed in the barrel itself, or in a metallic breech-piece, screwed upon the rear end of the barrel.
This recess 0 receives the sliding breech-pin (Z, that, when down in place, sets, at its forward end, against the rear of the barrel, and at its back end, against the abutment e. v
Beneath the breech-pin (Z, and within an undercut, or dovetailed recess in the bottom of the recess 0, is a sliding eartridge-retractor, 'i, that has a lip at its forward end, to act upon the flange of the metallic cartridge-case f, and this retractor i is connected, by a slot and screw, 2, or similar means, with the forward under part of the breech-pin, so that the retractor may be moved by said breech-pin, and that the retractor may hold down that end of the breech-pin d when the rear end is lifted above the abutment e and the breech slidden' 'back.
I provide grooves and ribs at 3, in the sides of the breech-pin d, taking correspondingly-shaped grooves in the metal above the abutment e and upper portion of the tongue, or strap 7), so that the breech-block will be guided by these grooves and ribs as it is slldden back to the position shown in fig. 2.
The upper and rear portion of the breech-block d is slotted, for the lever g to swing in.
This lever g has its fulcrum at Z, in the portion 1), which is slotted for its reception, and in this lever g is a slot, 5, for the pin 0, that passes across the rear upper-part of the breech-block (Z.
The length of the slot 5 is such, that when the lever g is moved into the position shown by red lines in fig. 1, the rear end of the breech-pin d will have been raised to the height necessary for the grooves and ribs to coincide, and the pin 0, coming to the end of the slot 5, the breech cannot be raised any higher, but will be slidden back by the further movement of the lever g.
The reverse movement closes the breech, and the spring m, acting under the heel 6 of the lever g, keeps theparts from swinging open accidentally, or in handling the piece.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The breech-block d, provided with the ribs and grooves 3, and fitted to slide back when raised out of the recess 0, in combination with the lever g, slot 5, and pin 0, substantially as specified, so that the lever g communicates to the breech the motions specified.
2. The sliding retractor 1', within an undercut groove at the bottom of the recess a, in combination with the breech-block d, for holding down the forward end of said breech-block, as well as withdrawing the cartridgecase, as specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this 8th day of May, A. D. 1868.
DAVID WILLIAMSON. Witnesses:
OHAs. H. SMITH, Gno. '1. PnvoKNn-Y.
