which the following is a speciiication.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in measuring devices for dress ma ers and the like, and has for 1ts obJect to so arrange a serles of measurlng tapes that they may be readilyplaced upon .a person in proper position for taking various measurements by which patterns may be produced and clothes made which will exactly fit the person from whom the measure-` ments were taken.

With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order thatthose skilled in the art to which this invention a pertains may understand how to make an use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a form to which my improved measuring device is applied. Fig. 2, a rear view of the same.

In carrying out my invention as here embodied for taking body measurements, I provide atape A having inches and fractions thereof marked thereon, and this tape isV adapted to pass around the neck of the person to be measured, and has a series ofbut ton-holes B formed therein for engagementV with the button C carried by the opposite end of this tape, by means of which the ta e may be snugly secured around the nec Secured to the buttoned end of this tape A is a ta e D intended to run down the center of the back for taking central measurements, it being also graduated in inches and fractions thereof for this pur ose. A graduated tape E is loosely attache by means of a loop formed therein to the tape A so as to slide thereon, and is intended to run down the front of the body for taking the front measurements, and'is provided with a series of button-holes F for the reception of the buttons Gr for attaching the cross tapes thereto. Two'graduated tapes H are also loosely attached to the tape A so as to slide thereon in order that they may be fitted u on the shoulders at the proper points for ta ring the shoulder measurements, and these tapes are likewise rovided with buttons I, which engage withJ buttonholes L, formed in shoulder eye tapes To one of the shoulder tapes H is attached by means of the button M a graduated tape N, whichis intended to take the measurements of the lay back and front length of the garment to be made, and this tape may be buttoned or otherwise attached to any or all of the cross tapes for keeping the latter in proper alinement, and as a further means of eeping the different measuring tapes in position, especially the arm eye tapes K, I provide a strap O which is loosely attached to the two shoulder eye ta es, and may be either pinned or buttone or otherwise secured to vertical tapes. Secured by means of buttons P to the shoulder eye tapes is a graduated tap-e Q running across the chest so as to give the upper chest measurement, and a corresponding graduated tape R is secured by the buttons S to the rear portion of the arm eye tapes and extends across the back of the ligure for taking the middle back measurements.

T is a graduated ta e which extends around the figure on the me of the center of the bust, and is attached by the button G in front to the tape E and in the back by the button U to the tape D, and this tape is for taking the bust measurements.

V are the side length measuring tapes loosely attached to the arm eye tapes so as to slide thereon, and these tapes extend in a straight line down the sides of the figure in order to take thelen th measures on this line, and to these side ength tapes are buttoned or otherwise secured the waist tape W, which is also buttoned to the front length tape E, and may be buttoned lor otherwise secured to the back length tape D.

X is agraduated tape adapted to be passed around the hi s and secured by buttons or otherwise to t e vertical tapes, so as to take the hip measures at the proper point.

When this arrangement of tapes has been properly adjusted upon the form of a person for whom the garment is to be made, all the essential measurements can be readily taken and transferred to a pattern design, or, the measurements may be transferred directly to the goods from which the garment is to be made, and if these measurements are properly transferred a garment made by the same will ofnecessity it the person from whom the measurements were taken in using the shoulder tapes.

It is to be understood that the shoulder tapes are to be Vof suilicient length to make the full arm measurements, and in doing this these tapes are brought down the arm to the elbow where it is fastened by the cross straps Y and then extended down to the wrist where they are each again fastened by the cross straps Z. This will permit the taking of the measurements from the shoulder to the elbow and again from the elbow to the wrist' and also the entire measurement from the shoulder to the wrist, which is an important feature in taking the sleeve measurements; and the cross tapes or straps Y and Z may be adjusted for taking the size of the sleeves at the elbow and wrist, as will be readily understood.

Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new and useful, is-4 A measuring device for dress makers and the like consisting of a tape to be passed around the neck, securing means at its ends, a tape to extend down the center of the back suspended from said securing means, a vertical tape having its top end looped and receiving said neck tape to be supported thereby extending down the front of the body,

said front tape having a series of buttonholes therein, a single pair of spaced front cross tapes having buttons secured to said vertical front tape, shoulder eye tapes, shoulder tapes slidingly connected to said neck tape and buttoned to said shoulder eye tapes, said two front cross tapes at their ends being buttoned to said shoulder eye tapes, a single pair of rear cross tapes buttoned to said vertical rear tape and at their ends to said shoulder eye tapes, a second vertical front tape secured to one of said shoulder tapes at its point of attachment with said neck tape, a connecting strap loosely attached to said shoulder eye tapes and secured to said vertical front straps at points below the neck and above the uppermost of the pair of cross front tapes, side length tapes slidingly connected to the shoulder eye tapes, a waist tape buttoned to all of said vertical tapes, said shoulder tapes being extended to form full arm tapes, and' cross wrist and elbow straps connected to said arm tapes.
