SKIRT-MEASURING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 6, 1908.
Application fil ed March 14,1908. Serial No. 421,082.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NANOIE E. MILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Skirt-Measuring Device, of which the followmg is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for measuring dress skirts, and has for its object to Referring to the accompanying drawing,-.-
in which similar reference numerals indicate like parts, Figure 1 illustrates the invention in use. Fig.2 is a side view thereof in section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the adjustable slide.
In the construction of this invention, a
measuring tape 1 is employed, provided with a Weight 2 at its lower end. In conjunction with the ta e 1 is provided a plate 3, shown in Fig. 3, aving the horizontal portion 4 provided with a vertical slot 5 at each end, and a depending central portion 6 provided with transverse slots 7 at each end thereof. The ta e 1 is passed through the back of the lower s 0t 7 of the portion 6, and through the outer gart of the upper slot 7 of the portion 6, and as its outer end secured to the plate 3 by means of the rivet 8 provided with a head or handle 9. The plate 3 is mounted on a belt 10, the latter passing through the slots 5 in the late 3.
The belt 10 with plate 3 being secured to the waist of a person the device is used as follows: To get the required length of the skirt, the tape 1 is drawn up through the lower slot 7 of the portion 6 in the form of a loop 11. Then take hold of the loop and lower the weight to the floor to rest there, seeing that the tape measure is perfectly straight. Holding the tape by the loop, a ply the tape to the waist line at the point W ere it extends from the waist to the weight on the floor, and note the number of inches at that point onthe tape, which indicates the distance from the waist line to the floor. Then holding the loop 11 draw the tape u as many inches as desired for the skirt to c ear the floor, and the correct and desired skirt length is thereby obtained since the number 7 of inches which thetape has been drawn up deducted from the number of inches measured from the waist line to the floor gives the desired length of the skirt. By moving the slide 4 on belt 10 from point to point and repeating the o eration hereinbefore set forth, the correct s rirt length can be obtained. The head or handle 9 may be used to move the slide 4 on the belt 10.
While the plate 3 has been shown to be slidably connected with the belt 10 by slots, and also provided with slots with which the tape has an adjustable sliding connection, the plate 3 may be formed with other connecting means than the slots by means of which the plate 3 may have a sliding connection with the belt, and the tape have an adjustable sliding connection w1th the plate 3.
What is claimed is 2- 1. A device for measuring skirt lengths, consisting of a belt; a plate slidably connected at its ends to the belt and a tape measure slidably connected at one end to the plate with its end secured to the plate, and a weight on its other end.
2. A device for measuring skirt lengths, consisting of a belt; a-plate with means at its ends slidably connecting it with the belt, and a depending portion with means for slidably connecting a tape measure thereto; and a tape measure with a weight at one end, and slidably connected with and fastened to the plate at its other end to form a loop.
3. A device for measuring skirt lengths, consisting of a belt; a plate with a transverse slot at each end, and a depending portion with a transverse slot on its lower end; the belt extending through the slots in the end of the plate; and a tape measure with a weight at one end, and at its other end passing through the slot in the depending portion and secured at its end to the plate.
4:. In a device for measuring dress skirts, the combination with a belt, of a slidable )late thereon having a horizontal portion w1th a slot in each end through which said belt passes, and a depending portion having slots for an adjustable tape, in combination In testimony that I claim the foregoing" as W1th a tape measure having a welght at one inyown, .l have hereto affixed my signature end and passing through the slots in the de- 111 the presence of two witnesses.
