Description

a. I. w. BAMUS. VAGINL SYRING.
APPLICATION IILBD MAY 1, 1905.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
CRISTIAN F. W. RAMUS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO BEN- JAMIN H. RING, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
VAGINAL SYRINGE.
T0 alZ whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN F. W. RA- MUS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Vaginal Syringes, of Wl1lCh the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to vaginal syringes and has for its object to provide a syringe of this character which has provision for not only fiushing the vagina but also for brushing and cleaning from the walls thereo1r any mucus or other foreign substance which would not ordinarily be removed by the flushing operation.
My improved syringe has been especially designed so that it Wlll not injure the parts operated on during the brushing or cleaning operation.
I Will first describe one embodiment of my invention and then point out the novel features thereof in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a part section and part elevation of an instrument embody ing my invention, the hrush being shown as withdrawn into the casing ready for insertion into the vagina; Fig. 9 is a similar view showing the brush projected ready for use.
3 designates a hollow or tubular stem which is shaped at one end 4 to be attachcd to the tube of any suitable syringe, either a bulle syringe or a fountain syringe. The other end of said stem has secured thereto in any suitable way a brush-like device 6 by means of which the walls of the vagin-a may be brushed or wiped. The brushlike devine herein shown and rhat which I prefer to use is made of filaments of bristle, herse-har or any other animal fiber, or even of some veg otable fil er or of any other suitable material, which filaments are doubled to form a loop, sueh as shown best in Fig. 2, both the ends of each filament being secured to the stem 3 thereby making the loop a permanent one. The filaments may be attached to said stem in any suitable way. I have herein shown them as thus attached by simply winding a cord 7 about the filament ends and stem.
8 designates a shield or casing Which is slidably mounted on the stem and has an interior chamber of a size to receive the brush 6.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 1, 1905.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Serial No. 258,183.
In using my improved deviee the brush is first withdrawn within the casing 8, as seen in Fig. 1, in order to facilitate its insertion into the vagina, and then the casing with its contained brush is thus inserted. Therealter the brush may be projected from the casing, as shovvn in Fig. 2, and as this coeurs the resiliency of the filaments causes the loops t0 spread and contact with the walls of the vagina. The stream of water which is delivered through the stem 3 from the syringe is spread into more or less of a spray by contact with the brush and thus flushes thoroughly the vagma. Any mucus or other coating on the Walls of the vaginal cavity which is not fiushed out by the force of the stream of water may be removed by a slight movement of the brush, and owing to the manner in which the brush is constructed such movement does not cause any injury.
Various changes in the construction of the device may be made without departing from the invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a vaginal syringe, a hollow stem, a brush at one end thereof made of parallel looped filaments, the looped portion of each filament being at the end 01 the brush, and a casing slidably mounted on the stem and adapted to be telescoped over the brush.
9. In a vaginal syringe, a hollow stem and a brush at the end thereof formed of a plurality of looped filaments each having both ends overlying the stem and the looped portion projecting beyond the stem, and a cord 7 wound about the ends of the filaments to permanently secure them to the stem.
3. In a vaginal syringe, a hollow stem, a brush at one end thereof, said brush heing composed of a plurality of looped filaments each having both its ends secured to the stem, and a casing slidably mounted on the stem and adapted to contain the brush.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHRISTIAN F. W. RAMS.
