Articles of furniture of this type are especially desirable where `a small amount of house room is available and when it is nec* essary to economize in the first cost of house furnishings.

This invention `in its practical embodiment includes a frame 10, which may if desired have upwardly projecting standards 11 to support an elevated shelf 12.` The space between the standards and beneath the shelf may be left open if desired, or it may be fitted with a mirror or other means of ornamentation.

The bed illustrated includes a stationary box-like member 13, secured to the frame 10. The member 14 of the bed is hinged to the upper portion of the stationary member and is adapted to fold upon the stationary mem* ber in one position and to open out as an eX- tension thereof in another position. The

line of connection between the bed members is substantially central and longitudinal of the same. The bottom 15 of the movable member when the bed is open abuts against the bottom of the stationary member, these bottoms forming a support for any suitable type of spring supported mattress, a conventional `form thereof being indicated at 16. The said bottom 15 constitutes a table top when the bed is closed or folded. Thus far described, when the device is folded that side or portion of the bed adjacent to the line of connection between the bed members is open or exposed. In order to close such open side so as to inclose the mattress and to present a finished appearance to the article of furniture, there is provided a movable panel 17, preferably hinged or pivoted at its ends and in alinement with its lower edge to the end members of the frame 10. As a convenient illustration of such means for securing the panel to the frame there are shown pivot pins 18 which enter corresponding holes in the frame. Vhen the panel is closed, its upper edge is seated against. the member 14 and beneath the outer edge of the table top 15. The panel representsan `imitation drawer when in this position, and

this appearance is emphasizedby providing thepanel with handles 19. Any suitable means may be provided to lockthe panel in its closed or vertical position. As an illustration of such means there are shown sliding bolts 20 extending slightly beyond the ends of the panel and which cooperate with sockets 21 of the frame. As a suitable means for mounting the bolts the panel is provided with grooves 22 and slots Q3. The main portion of a bolt lies within the groove 22, and the inner end of the bolt is outwardly turned and projects through the slot 23 within the hollow handle 19. The bolt may be held in its normal position by means of a spring 24. When the panel is closed the bolts will snap into the sockets 21. In order to drop the panel the operator may grasp the handles 19 in an ordinary manner and by the use of his fingers may withdraw the bolts in obvious manner. hen the panel is lowered as indicated in Fig. 6 it is out of the way of the movable bed member. The locking means for the panel are exceed ingly effective, and in no sense mar the appearance of the finished cabinet.

Located beneath the bed members and slidable within the frame 10 is a drawer 25,

of ordinary type, wherein may be stored articles of bedding or anything else desired. The drawer for appearance sake Should be fitted with handles 19, similar to those above described.

vAs a suitable means for supporting the movable bed member 14 when open there are provided supporting legs 26, pivoted to the said bed member. These legs are preferably carved so as to provide ornamental balls 27. In closing the bed the legs 26 are swung about on their pivots through an angle of 180o, and when the bed is folded the legs will thus project downwardly as before. In order to adord means to lock the bed folded the balls 27 of the legs are made to coperate with loops 2S, secured at any suitable point. As herein shown said loops are secured to the rear portion of the drawer 25. It will thus be seen that the legs in coperation with the loops will not only hold the bed member 14 closed but also lock the drawer shut.

As is customary in this type of folding bed a suitable mattress 16 is provided, and this may be supported by springs 30. A pillow guard consisting of a bar 31 having end hooks 32 and a frame pivoted thereto in the form of a skeleton yoke 33, serves not only `for the purpose of maintaining the pillows 1n proper position at the head of the bed but also serves to brace the movable bed member in its open position. This vresult is accomplished by cooperation of the hooks with brackets 34 secured in the corners of the bed members. The yoke 33 when in position for'supporting the pillows will occupy an inclined position against the end of the bed. In addition to the functions of the pillow guard bar 31 above described it is utilized to serve in connection with a link 35 to hold the mattress in proper position when the bed is being folded. To this end one of the hooks 32 engages in an eye 35 of said link and the other hook 32 engages in a bracket 36 secured to the end of the bed member 14 at a slight distance inwardly from the line of the hinges 37 and so located with respect to the bar 31 when the latter is in position to serve as a pillow guard that it will constitute a lock therefor to hold it in position and make its function as a brace more secure. The bar may be suiiiciently elastic to permit of being snapped beneath the lug 36. The pillows may be disposed upon the stationary portion of the mattress if desired.

The article of furniture thus described may be made of any suitable materials and of any appropriate dimensions. A comparatively few number of parts are used, and for this reason it is easy to manipulate and not likely to become out of order.

The modification illustrated in 11 indicates a leg 26 which interlocks with a stud 26 on the member 13. In order to unlock the legs and to provide a handle to lift the member 14, I provide a connection 38 attached to eyes 39 at the upper ends of the legs 26', and to which is secured a pullhandle 40.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:

1. The hereindescribed convertible article of furniture comprising a frame, a stationary bed member secured thereto, a movable bed member hinged to the stationary member, the bottom of said movable member consisting of a table in one position thereof, legs connected to the movable bed member to support the same when open, and means to coperate with said legs to hold the device closed for use as a table.

2. The combination of a frame, a stationary bed member. secured thereto, a movable bed member hinged to the stationary member to fold thereupon to constitute a table, a drawer slidable in the frame beneath the bed member to support the same when open, and means on the drawer to coperate with said legs to hold the movable member closed and to lock the drawer shut.

3. In a convertible bed, the combination of a frame, a stationary bed member secured thereto, a movable'bedv member hinged to the upper edge of the stationary memberto fold thereupon to constitute a table, the members when thus folded leaving an open side, an imitation drawer panel connected to the frame so as to move out of the way of the movable bed member when open7 hollow handles secured to the face of said panel, and locking means carried by the panel to hold the same in position to close said open side and releasable from within the handles.

4. The hereindescribed foldable bed comprising a stationary box-like member, a movable boX-like member hinged to the upper portion of the stationary member, the line of connection between the members being central and longitudinal thereof, a mattress, a pillow guard attached transversely of said members at one end of the bed and serving t0 lock the same open, and means connected to the stationary bed member to coperate with said pillow guard to hold the mattress in proper position when the bed is being folded.
