To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo E. RrioAnns, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Take-Up Mechanism for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates more particularly to take-up mechanism for looms, and it has for its object the production of means whereby the weaver can with one hand render inoperative the take-up, detent and let-back pawls when it is desired to operate the takeup manually, such operation being readily effected by the free hand of the weaver.
My invention especially applies to that form of take-up mechanism wherein a predetermined amount of let-back is permitted when the take-up pawl is released automatically from cooperation with the ratchet, and I have shown my invention embodied in mechanism substantially as shown and described in United States Patent No. 729593 granted to Jamieson June 2, 1903.
Figure 1 is a left-hand side elevation of a portion of a loom and its take-up mechanism substantially as in the atent referred to, with one embodiment o" my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a separate detail of the detent and let-back pawls, and the manually operated device whereby said awls are disengaged from the ratchet when esired.

As more clearly s own in Fig. 2 the detent pawl 1 is fulcrumed on a pin 2 extended laterally from the stand 3 fixed on a part of the cloth-roll guide, substantially as in the patent referred to, said pawl normally cooperating with the ratchet a and preventin retrograde movement thereof. baid pawi has a lateral lug 4 near its toe, which loosely enters the enlarged eye 5, see dotted lines Fig. 1, of a bracket 6 secured to and depending from the arm (1, so that when the latter is raised by turning of the rock-shaft d the detent pawl will be lifted from the ratchet at the same time that the link a" is lifted to throw the take-up pawl (1 out of engagement with the ratchet. Herein let-back is provided for by the pawl 7 having an elongated slot 8 through which the pivot-pin 2 extends loosely whereby when the pawls a and 1 are thrown out the pawl 7 by its engagement with the ratchet, and by reason of the slot 8, permits retrograde rotation of the ratchet a for one, two or more teeth, as may be desired.
Sometimes it is desired to operate the takeup by hand, and with three pawls to be disengaged from the ratchet it is impossible to accomplish the desired object unless the weaver can with one hand control the pawls while the other hand is left free to manipulate the take-up mechanism. Herein I have provided very simple and easily operated means for throwing out the three pawls by one hand.
The tail of the let-back pawl 7 is extended forward to form a lateral shelf or hand-piece 9, see'dotted lines Figs. 1 and 2, and a depending ear 10 provided with a headed stud 11 which enters loosely an elongated slot 12 in the upper end of a releasing link 13, pivotally connected at its lower end at 14 with the take-up pawl a The let-back pawl 7 has a lateral lug 15 extended under the detent pawl 1 near the toe thereof.
\Vhen the weaver desires to operate the take-up by hand he presses down the shelf 9 with his right hand, thereby elevating the toe of the let-back pawl and disengaging it from the ratchet, while the lug 15 lifts the detent pawl 1 from the ratchet, and when the stud 11 engages the bottom of slot 12 the link 13 is moved down in the direction of arrow 50, Fig. 1, throwing out the take-up pawl a against the action of spring 16. The ratchet is now free from the control of all three pawls, and the weaver with his left hand can move the take-up backward or forward, as desired, 1 and with perfect freedom so long as the shelf or hand-piece 9 is depressed.
When the hand-piece is released the vari ous pawls at once return to normal position in cooperation with the ratchet.
The slot 12 provides for the slight up and down motion due to the normal operation of the take-up pawl.
By noting the relative position of the takeup pawl and the other two pawls 1 and 7, Fig. 1, it will be manifest that without some controlling or releasing device for all of the pawls it would be impossible to operate the take-up by hand, as otherwise the weaver would need both hands to hold the pawls out of engagement with the ratchet.
The large area of the eye 5 in the bracket 6 provides for the manual release of the detent pawl without interference with the means for effecting its release automatically.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In take-up mechanism for looms, a ratchet, a take-up pawl to actuate it, detent and let-back pawls normally cooperating with the ratchet at a distance from the takeup pawl, and means to release automatically said take-up and detent pawls, to permit letback, combined with manually operated means to disengage all three of saic pawls from the ratchet, whereby the take-up can be operated by hand, said manually operated means including separate releasing devices for and to act upon the detent and take-up pawls, respectively.
2. In take-up mechanism for looms, a ratchet, an actuating pawl therefor, and detent and let-back pawls normally coo erating with the ratchet, said let-back paw having a releasing device for the detent pawl, combined with a manually operated actuator mounted on the let-back pawl, and a releasing device for the actuating pawl, operatively connected with said actuator, operation of the latter releasing all of said pawls from engagement with the ratchet.
3. In take-up mechanism for looms, a ratchet, an actuating pawl therefor, and detent and let-back pawls normally cooperating with the ratchet, combined with a handpiece extended from the let-back pawl, to disengage it from the ratchet, a device on said pawl to effect disengagement of the detent pawl and the ratchet at such time, and a releasing connection between the hand-piece and the actuating pawl, whereby the operator can with one hand render all of said pawls inoperative and with the other hand operate the take-up.
4. In take-up mechanism for looms, a ratchet, a take-up pawl to operate it, a detent pawl having a fixed fulcrum, and a letback pawl mounted on said fulcrum and provided with a releasing lug extended under the detent pawl, an extension on the let-back pawl having a lateral shelf forming a hand piece, and a releasing link connecting the eX- tension and the take-up pawl, depression of the hand-piece successively disengaging the let-back, detent and take-up pawls from the ratchet. v
5. In take-up mechanism for looms, a ratchet, a take-up pawl to operate it, a detent pawl having a fixed fulcrum, and a letback pawl mounted on said fulcrum and provided with a releasing lug extended under the detent pawl, an extension on the let-back pawl having a lateral shelf forming a handpiece, and a releasing link connecting the extension and the take-up pawl, depression of the hand-piece successively disengaging the let-back, detent and take-up pawls from the ratchet, combined with means actuated by a change in the operation of the loom to efiieet disengagement automatically of the take-up and detent pawls from the ratchet.
