WILLIAM VOGEL, Aor NORWICH, CONNECTICUT.
Laim 'Patent No. 91,692, darai .Tum 22,1869.
ASH-SIFTER.
The Schedulerefend to in these LetterarPatent and making part of the eme.
To all 'whom ma/y concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM VOGEL', of Norwich,
in the county of NewLondon, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Sitters; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal section of my ashsifter.
My invention relates toimprovements in ash-sitters;
It consists in lthe employment of an ordinary box,
which is provided, on its inner side, with a spring,
ingthe samewhen the coal or cinders are to -be removed,
in combination with suchotherdevices, the objeetof which will behereinafter fully' set forth.
To enable .others skilled in the art' to which my in` vention appertains, to makev and use the same, I will describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings- A represents an ordinary box, made in the shape seen 'in the drawing, said box being made with a tin iiange, g', around its inner-surface, about bali way down the box, the object of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
B is the sifter, which is hinged to the frame C.
The inner side of this frame is madewith a channel, in order that the tin frame C', which is attached to the sitter, may 4t `tight against `the wooden frame C.,
One end of the sifter is provided with a rod, D and when the sifter is ready for use, this rod passes over a pin or screw, E, attached to the inner surface of the wooden frame.
F is a spring, secured to the outer surface of the wooden frame C, the` spring being made and secured as seen in the drawing.
a a are brackets attached to the side of the frame C, in order that the said frame may fit tight in the box A.
G is the eccentric, which consists of an ordinary wheel, with projections on the same.
This eccentlic is attached to the end of the crank 11,. inside the box A, between the'side ofthe box and the A bar d, which holds one end of the crank.
I is a spring secured to the inner end of the box A, andso constructed that one end rests against the frame (lof the sifter. p Y The front end of the box A is provided with a pivoted door, J, so that when the operation of sifting has finished, this door is opened, and the rod D is detached from the pin E, and the sitter is placed in a line with the dool` J, which allowsthe coal to pass ont of the sifter into the receptacle for the same, which is placed underthe door J.
K is a drawer placed under the sifter, for the purpose of receiving `the, ashes, the tin flanges g being used Jno prevent the ashes from passing between the drawer and the sides of the box A.
`My machineis thus operated:
The sifter is placed in the'gbox A, resting on the brackets d d, the spring F coming incontact with the eccentric,G. Then, by turning the crank bthe projections on the eccentric strike the spring F, thus giving a lateral motion to the sifter, the spring I forcing 4the sitter back.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to 'secure by Letters Patn ent, is-
` 1. The rod D, when arranged and operated in the l -manner and for the purpose set forth. Y
2.. In addition to the above, the eccentric, G, springs F and I, in combination with the sifter B and rod D, arranged and operated substantially inthe manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I a'ix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM VOGEL. Witnesses:
DAVID J. DURAND, J oHN S. LESTER.
