CHARLES LOESCH, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
EDIBLE LABEL FOR BREAD AND THE LIKE.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 27, 1909.
Application filed July 25, 1908. Serial No. 445,368.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LoEsoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Edible Labels for Bread and the Like, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will. the art to construct enable, those skilled in and use the same.
This invention relates to alabel used for the purpose of indicating the kind of bread or cake that may be in a particular loaf, and the object is to provide a label that will be edible, and at the same time able to stand heat enough to bake ing its identity.
It is common for bakers to paste paper labels on a loaf of bread to indicate that the bread is of a given kind, the label being printed in any ink that the printer may happen to have on hand, but the paper is not edible and is very unpalatable should some of it happen to get in a persons mouth inadvertently. A still further disadvantage of the paper label is that it must be cut ofi' the loaf wasting a small amount of bread each time a label is cut off.
The drawing illustrates a label such as is contemplated.
The material must be of such a character as to make a suitable wafer when dried for the printing, and such a material capable the bread without losv In testimony whereof I of standing as high a heat as the material of which the loaf is made is found in rice or 1 wheat flour. This material is made into a paste and spread out thin enough to make a wafer, it is then printed on with a candy color which is edible, and which color must be of such a character as to retain its legibility after the baking operation, since all the labels are placed on the loaves before they are baked.
It will be noted that the heat necessary to bake the loaf is so considerable that at times the loaf and label are almost burned to a crisp, so that an important feature of the invention is the use of an edible label which is capable of standing a high degree of heat without losing its legibility.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
A new article of manufacture comprising a label formed of an edible material bearing thereon legible characters in an edible coloring matter and adapted to withstand a baking temperature without such discoloration as to render said characters illegible.
have set my hand this 22d day of June A. D. 1908, in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
