Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1909.
Application filed August 15, 1907. Serial No. 388,572.
- Beit known that I, LE ROY LAZEAR, a
citizenof the-United States, and a resident of. Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain Improvementsin' Curtain- Rods, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates'to certain improvements in curtain supporting rods such as are especially designedfor the support of curtains, portires and the like at windows, doorways, etc., and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of a simple and comparatively inexpensive.
' device is rendered simpler, cheaper and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which serve to illustrate the inventionFigure 1 is a plan view of the improved curtain rod; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device; Fig. 3 is a transversesection taken through the device in the plane indicated by the line a, a
in Fig. 2', and Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing one end portion of the curtain rod upon an enlarged-scale for illustrating certain features of construction to be hereinafter described. I
As shown in these views, the improved curtain rod comprises two members or sections 1 and 2 of similar formation, each being produced, as to its body portion, of a length or piece of stiff metal, of C-shape in crosssection, the body portions of said members 'or'sections, shown at 3, 4 on the drawings bein adapted to slide telesco ically one within the other in order to a ord the required adjustment of the length of the device for accommodating use at windows or doorwaysof diflerent widths. It is not usually necessary to form said members or sections in different sizes, since the metal from'which they are"produced will usually be sufficiently thin and resilient to permit the end of one member or section to be compressed 111 the hand and thereby to be slid within the open end of the bodyportion 3 of the other memher or section.
lhe cross-sectional conformation of the C- shaped body portions 3. and 4 of the members or sections is suchthat each body ortion has a flattened central part 5, extenr ed length wise along it and usually exposed at the front surface of the improved curtain rod, there being rearwardly curved orsemi-circular portions 6, 6, integrally produced along the up-.
per and lower edge portions of the parts -5, and the rear edge portions 7, 7, of said-semicircular curved parts 6, 6, being extended toward each other at the rear sideof the device in planes substantially parallel with the flattened front or central part-5.
At the outer end of each of said C shaped body portions 3 and 4 is arranged a rearwardly directed arm 7, formed as herein shown from a strip of plate metal one end of whichis inserted at the open end of the corresponding body portion 3 or 4, and is se curely held thereto by means of a rivet 9, while itsopposite end is rearwardly curved or directed as shown at 8, so as to permit of being carriedadjacent to the surface of the win ow or other casing upon which the device is to be supported, (seen at x in Fig. 4,=
and is formed with an integral outwardly extended'strai'ght and flattened art 10, the
. lower edge of which is provi ed with a notched openih 11, extended upwardly toward its centra part and adapted to be enga'ged over the shank of a screw 12 or other supporting device set in said casing 10, as indicated in Fig. 4, whereby the curtain rod, after its end portions shall have been engaged with said screws will be effectively and securely supported in position with its central part, comprising the lapped body portions 3 and 4, extended transversely across the window or door-way. By this construction,
the rod is permitted to be made sufficiently stiff to resist sagging at its central part due to the weight of the curtains or portiere's, the straight central portions 5 in connection with the semi-circular upper and lower arts of the members serving to-add materia y to the stiffness of the rod without undue increase in thickness of the material from which it is description that the device is susee tible of some modification without materia departure from the principles and spirit of the invention and for this reason I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the precise formation and arrangement of the parts herein set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A cu'rtain rod having telescolp ng members straight from end to end an i C-shaped in cross section, and metallic strips secured within the ends of said members and projecting laterally therefrom and having extremities-adapted for engagement with suporting devices upon a window casin to hold said straifght telescoping mem bers spaced in front 0 the said casing.
2. A curtain rod having telescoping members made C-shaped in cross section, and curved strips secured at opposite ends of the membersand directed laterally therefrom .and having at their extremities means for engagement with sup orting devices upon a Window casing to.hol( the telescoping members spaced apart from the said casing.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 12th day of August 1907, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LE ROY c. LAZEAR.
