SGAFFOLD.
Specification of Letters Patant.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Application led February 18, 1908. Serial No. 416,485.
T 0 all w71 om it Amay concern.' i
Be it known that l, GEORGE RAYZOR EARNnsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chaires, in the county of Leon and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scaffolds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to scaffolds, and. its primary object is to provide a device of this character which can be readily and quickly applied to trees, telephone posts, flag poles and the like, the scaffold being especially adapted for use by lumbermen, painters, and linemen.
A further obj ect of my invention is to provide a scaffold which is simple, durable and efficient, and which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Viith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
VFigure l is a perspective view, illustrating the manner in which a scaffold constructed in accordance with my invention is adapted to be used, and Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation, illustrating a slightly modified means for securing the scaffold in applied position.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, l designates a platform which is constructed of wood, metal or any other suitable material. The relatively outer end of the platform l is rounded, while the relatively inner end thereof is provided with a curve-d recess 2 for the reception of a tree or other object to which the scaffold is secured. A supporting member 3, of inverted U- shaped form, is secured to the platform 1 at a point adjacent its relatively inner end. The side arms of the supporting member 3 embraces the platform 1, and are provided with terminal eyes 1i through which pass bolts 5 which are let into the side edges of the platform, said bolts pivotally securing the supporting member in applied position. A hook 6 is mounted upon the connecting bar of the supporting member 3 and is preferably of the construction shown in the drawing. A supporting arm 7 is pivotally secured to the platform l at a point intermediate the ends of the latter, said arms being provided with a terminal eye S through which passes a staple 9 which is let mto the upper surface of the platform. The support ing arm 7 is provided at a point intermediate its ends with an eye l() which is adapted to be engaged by the hook 6, and the free end thereof is provided with a hook 1l. ln practice, the hook 11 is adapted to be engaged with a staple 12 driven into a tree or other object, or with one of the links of a chain 13. The chain 13 is preferably provided. with a snap hook 14 by means of which it may be secured in applied position. The member 3 supports the relatively inner end, while the arm 7 supports the relatively outer end of the platform 1.
lt should be apparent from the above description taken 1n connection with the accompanying drawing, that l provide a scaffold which is admirably adapted for the use of lumbermen, painters, and linemen; that the scaffold is simple, durable and efficient; and that it may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost. lt should also be apparent that as the arm 7 is pivotally se cured to the platform l, it may be readily and quickly engaged with and disengaged from the hoolr 6, thus permitting it and the supporting member 3 to be folded down on the platform. When the supporting arm and member are folded down on the platform 1, the scaffold presents a compact form for transportation or storage.
Changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be made within thescope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having fully described and illustrated my invention, what l claim is:
1. A scaffold comprising a platform, a supporting arm pivotally secured to the platform, a sup )orting member pivotally secured to the platform, and a hook connected with the supporting member for detachable engagement with the supporting arm.
2. A scaffold comprising a platform, a sup- In testimony whereof I affix my signature porting arm secured at one end to the platln presence of two Witnesses. form, said supportinv arm being provided f With a hook and an ezye, a supporting mem- GEORGE RAY/OR EARNEST' ber secured to the platform, and a hook cal"- Witnesses:
