Specification of Lettera Patent.
Eatented .Tully 20, 1909.
application filed Detener 31, 1908. Serial No. 460,485.
To all 'whom it may concer/l1.:
it known thatl, donn C. Fmoiinn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lJVhip- Sockets; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to whip sockets and the object is to provide an improved form of socket wherein the whip will be securely held against malicious or felonious abstraction.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved form of socket arranged 'to hold the whip handle from rattling therein but which may be readily 'released to permit the withdrawal of the whip.
A still further object of the' invention is to provide a means `whereby the locking` device may be held inveither closed or open position. l
With the above and other objects inview as will hereinafter become apparent, the in vention consists in general of a whip socket, a whip clamp arranged to be projected within or withdrawn from said whip socket, locking means for said clamp, and other 1neans,to hold said clamp in open or closed position..
The invention further consists in certain novel details of arrangement and combinav tions of parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and.:,-Figure l is a front elevation of a whip socket constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal transverse section of such a socket showing the clamp in closed position. Fig.` 3 is a similar view showing the clamp in open position.
The numeral 10 indicates the body of the socket. rlhis body is provided with a slot 11 -in one side thereof and upon the opposite side from the slot are provided suitable fastening means not being necessary here to be shown as they form no part of the invention'. On either side vof the slot 1l and at the upper c'nd thereof is located an ear 12 provided with a suitable bend to receive a pin 13. This ear is so arranged that it projects a considerable distance beyond the body of the socket as clearly shown in Figs. 2 andV ever 14,f
3. lll/lounted upon the in 13 isa l the arms of which are ent atl substantially right angles to each other. `The shorter arm of this lever is arranged to project throughv the slot l1 when ,the device is in locking position and u on the face of this shorter arm is prefera ly provided a pad of some and forming with'said surface the outer l corner of the lever. Upon the lower portion l of the lever is formed a flattened surface 18 adapted to contact with the body 10 of the whip socket so that the-motion of the lever inward when in the position shown in Fig. 2 is thereby limited. The extreme end 0f the longer arin of the lever is preferably pro-Y provided with a finger-piece 19 so arranged that a persons lingers may be readily 1nserted below the same for the purpose of raising the lever to the position shown in t Fig. Between this finger-piece 19 and the pin 13 is formed an aperture 20.` Upon the lower end of the whip socket is formed a pair of spaced ears '21 provided with apertures arranged to register with theapertures 20 as clearly indicated at 22.
ln order to hold the lever in the position shown in Fig. 2 there is provided a lock 23 of any ordinary form and arranged so that the bow of the lock passes through the apertures 2() and 22 thus securely olding the lever li'in locked position.
For, the purpose of retaining the lever 14 in either the locked or unlocked position there is provided at the upper front portion of the socket a spring 25. The lower end of this spring bent as indicated at 26. 'lhis bent portion is arranged to rest in one or the other of notches' 27 formed in the flattened faces of the lever.
It is obvious that this device may be used in connection with an Iform or type of whip socket and it is further obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and the constructions of the parts thereof Without departinf from the material principle involved. t is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come Within the scope thereof. v
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
l. ln a device oi the kind described, a whip socket provided with a slot at one side thereof, a pivoted clamping member adapted to be projected through the slot,
` whip socket a pair of right-angled faces provided on said clamping member, a spring held on said socket and arranged'to press against saidclamping' faces accordingly as one or the other 1s positioned beneathsaid spring.
2. ln a'device of the kind described, a rovided with a longitudinal slot at one si e thereof, a lient lever pivoted adjacent the slot and having one arm arranged totproject. therein to clamp a Whip, the otherv armot said lever being provided with 'a lock-receiving aperture, a' pair of spaced earsfformefd on. said socket each provided With an aperture adapted to register with the lock-receiving aperture o1 said clamping member, and a loci; adapted to pass through Said apertures and securely ock said clamping member in position.
3. in a device or" the kind described, a
Whip socket provided with a slot at one side thereof, a pair of spaced ears formed adp cent said slot, said ears being provided with pin-receiving apertures, a pin held in said apertures, a bent lever forming a clamping member pivoted on said pin, one arm of said lever bein arranged to project Within the socket an lock a Whi or be' Withdrawn therefrom as the lever 1s rotated, the other arm of said lever being provided with a lock-receiving aperture,'a pair of spaced apertured ears upon the lower end of said socket arranged to have the apertures therein in alinement with the ioclt-receiving aper ture of the clamping member when the same is in clamped position., a right-angled corner formed on said clamping member, a spring held on said socket arranged to press against one or the other of the faces of said right-angled corner as the saine is brought into position beneath the spring, and a look adapted to pass through the apertures in said ears and the arm ot the clamping member and hold the saine in locked position.
In testimony whereof, l my signature, iii presence of tivo Witnesses.
