UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT L. COMES, OF KERRVILLE, TEXAS.
SURGICAL INSTRUMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. OoMBs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kerrville, in the county of Kerr and the State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Surgical Instrument, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tonsilotome or enucleator, and the object of the invention is a device of this kind which will make a smooth clean cut, and which will cut to the base of the tonsil, if desirable without injuring the pillars.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
I11 constructing this device I employ a tube 1 which is longitudinally slotted adjacent one end as shown at 2, and sliding in said tube is a plunger rod 3 which projects from the non slotted end of the tube and carries at its outer end a thumb ring 4. Suitable rings 5 for receiving the fingers are carried by the tube 1 adjacent the non slotted end. Into the inner end portion of the plunger rod 3 is threaded a forwardly curved shank 6 which carries at its outer end a cutting blade 7 shown at right angles Specification of Letters Patent.

toward or moved away from each other, thus giving a relative sliding movement of the tube 1 and the rod 3 and opening or closing the blades. The blades have a vertical position when applied to the tonsil and when sufiiciently separated can be made to grasp the entire gland and a thrust of the plunger by the thumb closes the blades cutting away by a clean, smooth incision every thing between the blades.
By simply turning the instrument to the right or left it works equally well for either the right or the left tonsil. To hold the part out a small forwardly projecting needle 10 is carried by the shank 6.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the kind described, a fixed blade, a movable shank, a blade carried by said movable shank adapted to slide beneath fixed blade, and a needle carried by the shank and projecting toward the fixed blade, said needle being closed by the curvature of the shank, and holding parts out by the blades.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a straight tube longitudinally slotted adjacent one end, a curved shank held in said slotted end, a blade carried by said shank, said blade being at right angles to and overhanging the outer end of the slot, a rod movable in said tube, a curved shank carried by said rod and working in said slot, and a blade carried by said last mentioned shank, said blade being at right angles to the slot and adapted upon movement of the rod to cooperate with the first mentioned blade.
ROBERT L. OOMBS.
