Patented Nov 30, 1852.
No. 9,430. I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. FINNEY, OF FAYETTE COUNTY, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 9,430, dated November 30, 1852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. FINNEY, of the county of Fayette and State of Tennessee, have invented a newand useful Improvement in the common Cotton-Hoe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification.
No. l, A A, is a front view of a common cotton-hoe having four holes of one-fourth of an inch in diameter, more or less, to receive the rivets that connect the improvement to the hoe itself, which rivet-holes are marked a a a a.
No. 2, B B, is a plate of sheet-iron, steel, or cast-iron, somewhat narrower than the hoe itself, and of the usual thickness of a common hoeblade, having through the said plate a cir- -cular hole, 0, corresponding in size with the v these holes being intended to connect the plate B B and the hoe-blade A A together. This plate B B, above the eye-hole, has at first a slight inclination of its surface forward toward the laborer, and then curves backward from him, as is shown in the side view of the hoe and its addition or improvement, N0. 3, at B, so as to cut grass, &c., when the instrument is inverted and pushed from him or backward by the laborer. In the drawing No 2 the additional plate or improvement B B is represented at D D as curved in at its sides above the eyehole to make it lighter without affecting the breadth at the edge; but the breadth or depth of the improvement oraddition B B, or the form of its sides, can be altered at the will of the manufacturer, so that the forward and backward curves, as shown in No. 3, be preserved, and, if desired, the principal hoe A A and the addition or improvement B B can be made all of one piece.
No. 4 shows the principal hoe A A and the improvement B B connected by rivets.
The improvement that I claim my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The extension of the blade of the common cotton-hoe upward and backward in a curve from .B in such form and manner to enable the laborer, by inverting his instrument and pushing it from him. to remove by the cutting-edge B any grass, weeds, superfluous plants, 820., as described.
