Description

G. I. STOCKING.
POST BRACE ANGHOR.
,APPLICATION FILED JAN. 27. 1909.
aented Fab. 8, mi@
CLARK I.STOCKING, OF HIAWATHA, KANSAS.
l To all whom 'it 'may v concer-n:
` Hiawatha, in the county of Brown and State' of- Kansas, have invented certain new and- Beit known that I, CLARK I. Sinonimi, a citizen of the United States, residing at useful Improvements in Post- Brace Anchors'; land I do declare the following to be,
A `a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaiiis to make and use thesaine.
This invention relates to improvements inv post brace anchors. v
The object of the invention is provide a device of this characterwhich may be readily 4engaged .with-the ground and operated to securely fasten itself in the earth thereby rigidly anchoring the post brace.
A further object is to provide a post brace anchor" having improved construction f parts and means whereby they may be readily assembled for use.
- arran ement of parts as will Abe more fully descri ed and particularly pointed out in the ap ended claim. f
In t e accompanying .drawin Figure 1 is a perspective view of the' devfie withthe parts in inoperative position Fig. 2-is a verticalsectional view with the parts expanded in position for use; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-'3 of Fig. 1. l
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the anchor which consists of an expanding framehaving a substantially circular base, l2. The sides of the base are out away to provide diametrically opposite lugs, 3, from which project upwar -inwardly diverging arms, 4, which are connectcd'together at their upper ends and in said upper ends is formed a vertically disposed assage which alines with asimilar passage in the center of the base plate. The arms, 4, have an lar, outer sides for a purpose hereinafter escribed and on thebottom of the base, 2, are formed V=shaped Vholding lugs which are adapted to engage the earth when -the expander is in operative position', to
' e prevent the same from turning.
ut'er ends of the arms, 4, and in the base, 2,
l is an operating rod, 5, the inner end of which is provided with ahead, 6, which enga es .the
lower side of the base, 2', and holds t e' ex- Loosely engaged with the apertures in the 'V\.\ EOST-BBACE ANCHO R.
pander iii aosition. 0n the outer end of the Patented lflebrSQQO.
-rod is pre erably formed an eye, 7. On the rod, 5, is a cross head, 8, said cross head havthe rod is revolved, said threaded lower end will be screwed through the cross head. In
vthe opposite ends of the head are formed bearing apertures in the outer .portions of which are formed cylindrical bearin s, 9K
Operatively engaged with thehea 8, are anchoring wings, 10, each ofwhich consists of arms, 19., having on their A upper ends hooks, 13, which are adapted to be engaged with the bearing apertures and bearings, 9, in the opposite ends of the: cross head, 8. On the lower ends of the arms' 12 are formed laterally projecting segmental anchorn blades 14, which are adapted to be forcel into the earth in the manner hereinafter described. AIn the inner-side of the arms, 12 and inner edges of theblades, 14, are forme V-,shapedrooves, 15, which are adapted to be engage by the triangular outer sides of the expandin frame, whereby when the said expander is rawnrupwardly by the opera- -tion of the rod, 5 in thethreaded 'aperture of the cross head the lower portion of said arms and blades will be expanded. On the outer sides of the arms, 12, are formed bracing webs, .16, in which adjacent to the blades, la.,l
blades to beexpanded. AWVheii the arms and blades are in a retracted position, the inner edges of the blades 14 are broughttogether or into close relation and when the anchoring ai-iiis and blades are in an expanded p07' sit-ion the base (5 of the expander will partly lill the space between the expanded blades.
Iii the operation of the device a hole is first drilled iii the ground after which the' anchor with its parts iii a retracted or inopcrative position is inserted intothe' drilled hole after which the voperating rod' 1s .re-
volvcd in the proper direction to draw'the inner end of the. sametogether with the expander up between the anchoring arms and blades, thereby forcing the saine laterally into the earth, forming the sides of the bore.
Whenlthe anchoring blades have been thns expanded, the anchor will be securely held in the earth.
It will be noted that by providing the' cross head, 8, with a threaded aperture to receive the operating rod that the necesslty A of providing operatingnuts or other devices is entirely obviated.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction .and operation of the inven` tion will be readil)1 understood without re- I quiring a more extended explanation.
Varlous changes in the form, proportion 'and Vthe minor details of eonstrnctimi may. -be resorted to without departing' Troni the. lprinciple or sacrltiemg any ot the invention as defined in the appended claim.
lhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
In a postbrace anchor, an expander comprising a edge-shaped,frame having .a substantially circular base, an operatingrod havingja swivel engagement with said ex-v pander, a cross head having a screw-threadj ed engagement with said rod, bearlngs -formed onLthe' outer ends of said cross head,
wings in an inoperative position, said lmeans being adapted to be broken by the expansion of the wings.' "f
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand' in presence'of the subscribin'gwitnesses.
