INVENTOR /ZM// fi UNITED STATES IjE ENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. SMALLEY, 0F YONKERS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO EVA A. SMALLEY,
YONKERS, NEW YORK.
ADJUSTABLE BOOK-COVER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SMALLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Yonkers, in the county of l/Vestchester and State of New York, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Book-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a temporary covering for books which is adapted to be placed over the regular bindin and to protect it from dirt and wear. I ts object is to improve upon such coverings and especially upon my former covering for books for which Patent No. 639,451 was issued to me December 19, 1899.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts described in the following specification, the novel features of which are pointed out in claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the parts of which my cover is made. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the various parts folded into their finished shape and connected together. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a book having one of my improved covers applied thereto. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of one of the parts which I use in carrying out my invention.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
10 designates a blank of paper or other flexible material from which the book'cover to be constructed. In Fig. 1 two such blanks of similar shape are shown. These sheets are first folded along the parallel horizontal lines 11 and 12 with the folds 13 and 14 over the main portion 15. The papers thus folded are again bent back along the vertical lines 16 until they have assumed the shape in which they are shown in Fig. 2. The surfaces of the sheet which are bent back against the main portion 15 may be secured thereto by means of paste. By comparing this peculiar arrangement of folds with my former patent above cited it may be seen that these folds are exactly the same as those disclosed in said patent except that in this case the cover is cut in two aml the portion which, in the former cover, is adapted to go over the back portion of the binding of a book is removed.
20 designates a pad of paper or other flexible material which is a separate and inde- Specification of Letters Patent.

pendent piece adapted to be pasted onto the folded portions of the cover which I have just described and which may be attached thereto by means of paste or glue or in any other suitable manner. The form of this pad which is shown in Fig. 1 is that which I prefer, and in this case it comprises two side pieces 21, 21. which are preferably of the same material as are the folded covers which are formed from the blanks 10, 10. Between these two side pieces 21., 21 is a strip of transparent material 22 such, for example, as tracing cloth or celluloid, which may be attached to the side pieces 21, 21 by means of cement or paste, or may be attached thereto. by stitching as is shown at 23. The form of back pad shown at 20 in Fig. 1 is to be used in such cases where it is not desired to have a transparent back for this cover.
Fig. 3 shows clearly the manner in which this cover may be slipped over the binding of a book. In applying this cover to the binding of a book I first place the folded portions which are made out of the blanks 10, 10 over the sides of the binding and force them back onto the binding as far as they go; then, with the book in its closed position, I apply the back pad 20 and attach it to the side portions by any suitable means, such for example, as paste. This covering is adjustable and therefore adapted for use on books of different sizes. For books of different heights I make the horizontal folds at different distances apart, corresponding to the vertical dimension of the books binding.
From the manner in which the cover is applied to a book it may be seen there may be more or less variation in the width of the books binding which is provided for by the length of the side pieces 21, 21 of the back pad 20.
A cover made according to this invention has many of the advantages which my former book cover had and in addition to them is adjustable as I have just described so that it may be applied to books of different dimensions without varying the size and shape of the blanks 1O, 10 from which the cover is made, except in cases of great differences in size, and also by being pro vided with a trans mrent back does not obscure the titles which are generally printed upon the backs of books. This cover is of extremely simple construction and is neat in appearance and fully protects the binding of a book to which it is applied from dirt and from wear.
hat I claim is.-
l. A covering for books comprising two folded portions of flexible material adapted to inclose the sides of a book, and an independent back affixed to said folded portions, said back being constructed of two side pieces of the same material as that of the folded portions, and an intermediate transparent strip attached thereto by stitching and forming a connection between the folded portions.
2. A covering for books comprising two sheets of paper of substantially rectangular form, each having two parallel folds overlapping each other at their inner edges, and a fold at right-angles to and crossing said parallel folds, and forming a pocket adapted to inclose one of the covers of a book; and an independent back afiixed to and connecting said folded portions at a desired distance apart.
3. A covering for books comprising two sheets of paper of substantially rectangular form, each having two parallel folds overlapping each other, and a fold at rightangles to and crossing said parallel folds and forming a pocket adapted to inclose one of the covers of a book, and an independent back pasted to and connecting said folded portions at a desired fixed distance apart, said back comprising two pieces of paper and an intermediate transparent strip attached thereto.
4. A covering for books comprising two sheets of paper of substantially rectangular form, each having two parallel folds overlapping each other, and a fold at rightangles to said parallel folds and crossing a portion thereof and secured to the same at their surface of contact, said folds forming a pocket for the reception of one of the covers of a book; and a back connecting said folded sheets, said back'comprising two side pieces of paper and an intermediate transparent strip attached thereto by stitching.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. SMALLEY.
