Description

J. BERNHARDT.
COMBINED BOOK MARK AND CORNER PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION TILED JULY 24.1909.
1 Patented July 1910.
twardly and upwardly UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
-ULIAIN BERNHARDT, OF SAN FRANCLSCO, CALIFORNIA comnmnr BOOK-MARK AND oonnnnflrnornoron To all-whom concern: Be it known thatLJULIAN BEBNHARDT,
a. citizen ofthe United States, residing at San -I ra'ncisco, in the county of San Fran- .ei sco and State of'Califgrnia, have invented new. and lieflll Improvementsin Combined- B ook Marlfs-a nd Corner-Protectors, of
which: the tolloy'vin' is' "a specification;-
This .inventidn relates to a combined book mark and pageor' cornerprotector.
L "Thejobjectbf the invent-ion i's to provide a l sii'nple,-efiieie i and inexpensive device, for
claimed, reference being had to covering and protectin the corners of the covers or leaves of oolctb-protect the same from injury, and which is also'adapted.
to perform the" function of'a book mark.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and the accompanying drai'ving, in which Figure l is a )erspective view of a 01'- tion of an open ook showing the app icartion of the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the protector. Fig. ,3 is a transverse section on l1ne 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 1s a bottom plan view of the protector.
As shown in the drawing, the protector comprises a. triangular body, top portion or plate 1 provided with correspondingly shaped bottom flanges or plates 2 extending inwardly from the side edges thereof and having their adjacent inner edges spaced apart in parallel relation or substantially so. These bottom flanges or plates are formed with extensions 3, similar in shape thereto, which project in corresponding relation beyond the front or basal edge 4 of the said body or top plate 1. Each flange and its extension thus forms a triangular base piece whose sides extend at right angles to the respective sides of the to plate. The-device as thus constructed is Formed from a suit able blank of sheet metal, preferably spring sheet metal, although it may. be made of colluloid or other suitable material, the flanges forming with the body plate a triangular pocket to receive the corner of a cover or leaf or corners of a plurality of leaves ofa hook, and also serving as jaws to clamp the cover or leaf against the body plate.
.l'relerably the connecting edges of the top plate] and bottom llai'ig'es 2 are made in partially circular form to --provide spring Specification Iietters Patent. Patented July 19, 1910..
Application filed July '24, iota. Serial no. 509,352.
t asishow'ii in i 3, bywhich con-' tecto'fitor the lowercornered'ges of the ex posed'lea'ves'o'f e book of the kind normally. .kept-opfen'at current -pages,f.such as a hotel register, log book, account book ete, to revent such corners from becoming soile or torn 'frolnffrequent handling. In the latter amed use it will, of-course; be understood that for additional: security each-Z protector used may be engaged with the corner edges of the top page and one or more underlym pages, and that in this connection it wil serve as afbook mark to enable the' book,
T jtlit-hif inner freeiedges normally greater range. of resilient acwhen closed, to beat once opened at the proper page.
In applying the device'to' the corners of one or more leaves, the corner portions 6 and 'Z are engaged by the thumb and tore finger of the hand and the device manipulated to slip the extensions 3 of the protector beneath the leaf or leaves until the corner or corners thereof is or are in line with the space betweensuch extensions and the center of the front edge of the top plate 1, when the leaf or leaves are held firmly and the device slid onto the same, whereby the corner or corners of the leaf or leaves is or are inserted between the top plate and flanges 'or jaws find clamped by the latter against the former. In removing the device, the corners 6 and 7 are grasped in like manner and the protector forcibly slid off.
By reason of the peculiar construction of the protector several advantages are obtained. The extensions 3 of the bottom flanges "2 not only admit of the more ready insertion of the device between leaves, but I add weight beyond the clamping point to insure a firmer engagement of the protector with the leaves and to hold the exposed leafdown flat. According to the number and thickness of the leaves engaged, it will he understood that the flanges 2 will yield to a greater or less extent, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the loops 5 permitting a maximum range of movement so that a number of leaves may be inserted and clamped firmly; the clamping action increasing pro- It will be seen that my invention provides a protector which is simple of construction and etfective for its intended purpose. H'avin thus fully described the invention,
'what is e aimed as new; is
1. A corner protector formed from asingl strip of material and comprising a tri- V r top plate, triangularbottom-fiangesex'te'ndin 'mwardly from the side edges of the to p ate, and trian ular extensions from 'said nges rojeeting eyond the front edge '0 f .thetop.p ate, said flanges and extensions form'in triangular bottom plates arranged in-par e1 relation to the to plate and having their inner edges space afart throughout their length and arrange 'g'l'es tosaid front edge of the to late.
2. A 'corner protectorform rom asingle'strip of material and ompris'ing a tri 7 edges at right an-' the to plate and-connected at their outer Bald 'si e edges'of the top gressivel'y Viitll the nuinber of leanesl Hence angular top plate, triangular bottom flanges extendinganwardly from the side edges of partially cirolilar spring loo :11. late, and'tri-' g lar extensions from sai flan es 'projectirfi be ondthe forward edge 0 the top I plate; sai trian ular bottom plates arranged in parallel re ati'on to the top plate and having their inner edges 'spaeedapart throughout their length and arranged at right angles to said front edge of the top plate.
flanges and extensions formingv In' test1m'ony whereof I affix my signature in presence two Witnesses. I g JULIAN BERNHARDT' -Witnesse "z I VIV n, RYAN, Mare G. ABRAHAMBON.
