UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD ZUVER LEWIS, OF FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE GENERAL MANIFOLD AND PRINTING COMPANY, OF FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORA- TION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
SALES-CHECK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Application filed February 28, 1908. Serial No. 418,208.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD ZUVER Lnwrs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usesful Improvements in Sales-Checks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to duplex sales checks, such as are used in restaurants and like establishments and which include two connected sheets, one of which constitutes a customers check and the other a waiters check, and transfer means interposed between the sheets by which carbon copies of the items written on the superposed sheet are made upon the lower sheet, which constitutes the customers check; the superposed sheet being intended to be separated from the customers check by the waiter and used by the latter as an order or waiters check in obtaining from the kitchen or other department the articles ordered.
My invention embraces improvements in a duplex check of the kind hereinbefore referred to, whereby the superposed sheet, or that on which the items of the order are di rectly written, consists of a plurality of detachable sections or coupons on which items of different classes, or which are to be ob tained from different departments of the same establishment, may be separately written, and which may be detached and delivered to the different departments as orders for the articles called for, while at the same time all of the items entered on the difierent sections or coupons will appear upon the customers check.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claim.
As shown in the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the duplex check embodying my invention. Fig,
2 is a face view of the sheet constituting the customers check. Fig. 3 1s a face view of the sheet constituting the waiters coupons before the same is attached to the customers' check. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the two connected sheets forming the duplex check. As shown in said drawings, 5 mdicates a sheet which constitutes the customers check and which is preferably made of relatively stiff paper or cardboard. 6 indicates the waiters check sheet which s preferably made of thin paper and which s provided on its back surface with a coatmg of carbon or other transfer material whereby any writing upon the said sheet will be transferred to the customers check.
The two sheets 5 and 6 are connected with each other at one of the side or lateral edges of the duplex check in any suitable manner, permitting the same to be readily separated from each other. As illustrated, the check sheet is provided at one of its side edges with a laterally extending strip 7 separated from the body of the sheet by a line of perforations 8, and adapted to be pasted to the under surface of the side margin of the customers check sheet 5, as clearly seen in Fig. 4.
The waiters check sheet 6 is provided with a plurality of transversely extending perforated lines 9 and 10 extending from the free lateral margin thereof to the perforated line 8, and dividing the said sheet into a plurality of detachable check slips or coupons 11, 12 and 13. The customers check sheet 5 is without any perforated lines but is preferably provided with transverse printed lines or otherwise marked to inclieate a plurality of transversely extending spaces 11, 15 and 16, corresponding with the sections or coupons of the waiters check sheet. The customers check sheet will have at the right hand side margin thereof a vertically arranged space 17 extending substantially the full length of the sheet and in which the amounts charged for the several items appearing on the sheet may be entered in a single column. The two sheets will bear a common designating ehara-ct'efor" number which, in the case of the superposed or waiters check sheet 6, will also be applied to each of the sections or coupons 11, 12 and 13 thereof.
From the construction described, it will be manifest that either of the sections or coupons 11, 12 and 13 of the waiters check sheet 6 may be detached from the said sheeti and from the customers check by tearing or dividing the said sheet along one of the transverse lines 9 or 10 and also along the line 8, and that one or more of said sections or coupons may be detached at a time as desired, leaving one or more of the said checks or coupons attached to the customers check.
In the use of the duplex check made as described, the items constituting the principal part of an order, such as those calling for articles to be obtained from the kitchen, will be entered in the space at the upper or main part of the check, constituting the coupon 11, and which will usually be made long enough to contain a considerable number of items. Items constituting an order going to another department as, for instance, to the bar, will be entered at the same time or later upon the lower coupon 13. Items constituting later orders for the same or other departments may be entered on the coupon 12. As the entry of each item is made a coupon or transfer duplicate of the entry will be made upon the main or customers check 5 and on this check the charges for all of the items will be entered and the same delivered to the customer to be handed to the cashier when paying the check. Thewaiter in obtaining the articles ordered will separate the coupons from the customers check as needed, delivering one check to the kitchen and other sections to other departments, or to the same department in the case of additional or later orders for articles of the same class as previously ordered by the same customer.
The duplex check made as described serves to enable the proprietor of an establishment to keep a check upon articles furnished to customers from different departments of the establishment; it being manifest that, by comparing the several items on the separate waiters check coupons in the hands of different supply departments with the customers check in the hands of the cashier, the proprietor may ascertain that all of the articles furnished by the different departments were properly entered upon the customers check and paid for by the latter.
In the accompanying drawings, a duplex check is shown in which the superposed or waiters check sheet is divided into three coupons only by two perforated lines, but it will be understood that such superposed check sheets may be transversely divided into any desired number of coupons, thereby providing for orders from a number of different departments and for a number of orders given at different times by the same customer, all of which will be recorded on one customers check. WVhile the superposed or waiters check sheet 6 is shown as provided with a line of perforations 8, permitting the easy detachment of the individual sections of coupons from the customers check, yet the presence of such a line of perforations is not essential, especially where the customers check is made of relatively thick or stiif paper, inasmuch as the separate sections may, in such a case, be readily detached or torn along the line of junction between the sheets, without the presence of the said perforated line 8.
I claim as my invention A duplex sales check consisting of a customers check-sheet of relatively stiff paper or cardboard, and a waiters order-sheet of greater width than said customers check, having one margin folded beneath and secured to the lower marginal surface of said customers check, the waiters or uppermost sheet being provided with transversely extending perforated lines forming a plurality of detachable order slips or coupons, and the customers or lowermost sheet and all of the waiters order slips 0r coupons bearing a common identifying mark or number, combined with transfer-means applied to the rear face of said waiters order sheet acting to produce on the customers check sheet a copy of all items entered on said detachable order sheet and its slips or coupons.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this 21st day of February A. D. 1908.
EDWVARD ZUVER LEWIS.
