DEVICE FOR GIVING HORSES PILLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 29, 1910.
Application filed June 18, 1910. Serial No. 567,544.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOI-1N J. GRIMM, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Giving Horses Pills, of which the following is a speciiication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for treating horses medicinally, and particularly Jfor giving horses pills; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be conveniently manipulated or used; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following speciication, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a sectional side View of a device embodying my invention and showing one step of the process of using the same, and ,-Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. l but showing the parts in a different position.
llIy improvement comprises a tubular handle member a provided at one end with a cup-shaped or bell-shaped attachment Z), to the perimeter of which is secured a transverse closure disk or diaphragm o2 of rubber, said disk being provided centrally with a socket-shaped receptacle b3, and the central portion of the inner side of said disk being thickened or provided with a stud b4, to which is secured, in any desired manner, a rod c which extends longitudinally through the handle member a.
The handle member' a is preferably composed of two parts detachably connected at a2, and in the end portion thereof opposite the cup-shaped or bell-shaped attachment b is a telescopic tubular member a3, which is adapted to be drawn out of the main part of the handle member as shown in Fig. l, or telescoped thereinto as shown in Fig. 2, and the outer end of which is provided with a ring, knob or handle device at.
Mounted on the rod 0 and in the end portion of the handle member a adjacent to the cup-shaped or bell-shaped attachment b is a disk d, which is secured-to said rod, and a disk e is also secured in the opposite end portion of said handle member and through which the rod c loosely passes and between said disks l and e is placed a spiral spring j.
The end portion of the handle member a in which the telescopic tubular member a3 is placed is provided witha longitudinal slot g, and a similar slot g2 is formed in the part a3, and secured in the part a3 at g3 is a spring g4 having a nose piece which passes outwardly through the slots g2 and g, and which will hold the telescopic part a3 of the handle member in the withdrawn position as shown in Fig. l, and when said spring g4 is forced inwardly the spiral spring will force the parts of the device into the position shown in F 2.
In practice a pill L is placed in the socket b3 of the disk or diaphragm b2, and said disk or diaphragm being composed of elastic material the said socket may be so formed that it will hold a pill of any desired size. The telescopic part a? of the handle member a is then drawn outwardly as shown in Fig. l and this draws the disk. or diaphragm b2 inwardly as is also shown in said figure. The head of the device formed by the cupshaped or bell-shaped end attachment ZJ may then be inserted into the mouth of a horse and by applying pressure to the spring g4, by means of the thumb or a linger, the telescopic part L3 of the handle member will be released and the spring f will force the parts into the position shown in Fig. 2, and the pill 7L will be projected into the throat of the horse.
This device is simple in construction and operation and will not get out of order, and it may beused, as will be understood, for treating other animals as well as horses. It will also be understood that a number of the spring devices g4 may be provided so as to lock the telescopic part a3 of the handle member in different positions and thus control the operation of the flexible diaphragm b2 to an extent, and said telescopic part a3 of the handle member may be made of any desired length as may also the other part of said handle member.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A device of the class described, comprising a tubular handle member provided at one end with .a telescopic part and at the means for locking the telescopic part of the handle member and saidrod in their outermost Aposition and a tension device Within the handle member for forcing said rod and telescopic part of the handle member in the direction of the cup-shaped head.
Y prising a tubularhandle member provided g at one end with a cup-shaped head closed 21 A device of kthe class described, comby a transverse elastic diaphragm provided I centrally of the outer side thereof With a socket or recess, said handle member being provided at its opposite end With a telescopic part, a yrod passing through the handle member and connected centrally With the flexible diaphragm and also With said telescopic part, means for withdrawing the telescopic part to its outermost position and a tension device for forcing said rod and telescopic part of the handle member in the direction of the cup-shaped head.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in v presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 17th day of June 1910.
