- citizen of the United States,residing in the Cir city and countyof San Francisco and State of-California,have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed-Rests, of which the following is a specification.

My. invention relates to what is termed a "bed rest, for the support .of invalids or others, when lying in bed.

It consists ofv a removable frame having standardsand ahinged supplemental frame pivoted thereto, so as, to allow the hair mattress to extend directly through beneath the hinged frame, whereby, the latter may be .tilted' upwardly or dropped upon the mattress.

Many forms of tiltable head rests have been employed in connection with beds or couches, either directly connected and forming a part of the bed frame or so constructed that it is necessary to remove them when not in use.

It is the object of my invention to proride a device of this character which may remain permanently upon the bed or couch and when not in use to present no undesirable feature while the person is lying in a normal position, but which maybe readily raised into an inclined position whenever desired.

As herein shown, A is a main frame made substantially rectangular in shape, and of such width as to fit the bed or couch, and of a length sufficient to shoulder rest, 3. This'rest is also rectangular having three sides, as shown, and'the ends of the two side pieces are hinged to vertical standards 4, which may be rigidly and permanently fixed to the ends of the frame A, which are most distant from the head of the'couch, and which occupy a position within the length of said couch. notches, and thus hold the frame and rest 3 at any desired angle.

If it is desired to disengage the pawl and allow the head rest to drop, it may be readily effected by means of a cord or other connection 8 attached to the pawl bar and extending out through the head end of the frame. By pulling upon this connection the pawl will be lifted free of the notches, and the rest may be then dropped to any desired position.

In order to support a mattress which extends through this frame and entirely to the end of the bed or couch, so that it will not press upon the pawl barand preventthe latter from being freely moved, I have shown longitudinally placed supporting bars 9 extending from the head of the inner end of the main frame A, and that portion of the mattress which extends through this device will be supported upon these bars andsuficiently above the pawl bar to allow the latter to be readily raised and'to move ir unison with the desired movements of the head rest.
