Description

w. w. STEWART. SURGICAL INSTRUMENT.
APPLICATION TILED NOV. 5, I909 Patented June 13,1911.

WITNESSES INVENTOR Attorney WILLIAM WEAVER STEWART, 0F COLUMBUS, GEORGIA.
SURGICAL INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 13, 1911,
Application filed November 5, 1909. Serial No. 526,426.
To all whom it may concern. 1
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. STEWART, of Columbus, in the county of Muscogee and State of Georgia, have invented certain new.
. be employed to protect from the effects of urine, a lacerated perineum or other proximate area of a female which is so located that urine, it naturally passed, would flow over such area and in so doing, ailect the same to such an extent as to prevent perfect.
union or proper healing.
With this object in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of the instrument. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the'mouth portion of the device.
1 represents a receptacle having a general tapering shape, the lower portion of the receptacle being curved somewhat and tapering gradually to a comparatively small nipple 2, with which a suitable tube is connected for conveying fluid to a suitable vessel. The receptacle also tapers somewhat toward its opposite end Where it is made circular in cross section and internally threaded for the reception of a threaded nipple 3 on a mouth piece 4. The mouth piece 4: is made, preferably, of hard rubber and, beyond the threaded nipple, has a general oval shape. The rim forming the opening of the mouth piece'is so formed that at one end of said opening, the rim is curved as at 5, while the side portions 6-6 of said rim are approximatcly parallel with each other and, throughout portions of their lengths, incline somewhat toward the base of the. mouth piece. The inclined side portions 6 of the rim of the mouth piece merge into forwardly curved portions 7 and meet at the apex of a tapering finger or extension 8 at,
the end of the mouth plece opening opposite the curved portion 5 thereof. The rim forming the opening of the mouth piece is thus so shaped that it can be adapted-to and fit closely against the parts surrounding the urethra of the patient so as to prevent the passage or leakage of urine past the covered parts to lacerated or diseased parts to be treated.
It will be observed that the mouth of the instrument is so formed that it will approximate, as nearly as possible, the curves existing in the pubic arch and also as is best adapted to comfortably yet completely cover the urethra. In applying the device, its mouth piece will be firmly pressed upwardly and inwardly, first moving aside the labia, both major and minor, and thus obtain absolute and close apposition and preclude all leakage of urine to areas requiring surgical protection.
In order that antiseptic solution may be introduced through the instrument and discharged against the area. surrounding the urethra, the receptacle 1 is provided interiorly with a tube or duct 9, disposed to discharge through the mouth piece 4, and with this tube or duct, a nipple 10 on the receptacle communicates,-said nipple being adapted for the reception of the tube of a fountain syringe or other container of antiseptic or other medicated solution.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
A gynecological urinal comprising a tapering receptacle of rigid material adapted at one end for the attachment of a. tube and provided at its other end with a mouth piece, having a rim adapted approximately In testimony whereof, I have signed this to the curve existing in the pubic arch, a specification in the presence of two subscribtube or duct within the receptacle and aring witnesses.
ranged to discharge through said mouth \VILLIAM WEAVER STEWART. 5 piece, and a nipple communicating with said Witnesses:
tube or duct and adapted for the attachment J. A. KIRVEN,
