To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT W. TAYLOR, citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a safety device for holding a hat pin or the like in place.

An important object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character, and which will be positive in its operation.

A further object of my invention is to provide a hat pin holder which may be readily secured to a ladys hat, and which will be neat and attractive in appearance.

A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above character, which may be employed for retaining ornamental hair pins upon the head of the wearer.

My invention consists generally in the combination of a pin provided with a crimped end and a holder for the same comprising a casing within which is arranged a spring member.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device, parts thereof being broken away. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical cross-sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical horizontal sectional view through a portion of my device.

In the drawings within which the preferred embodiment of my invention is disclosed, 1 designates a hat pin provided with a head 2 and having its free end crimped as at 3. I further provide a hat pin holder for cooperation with the crimped end 3, comprising a cylindrical casing 4, having its inner end open and having a head or cap 5 secured upon its outer end. The head 5 may be of any desired shape or ornamental design, and is secured to the cylindrical casing 4 by means of solder or the like. Within the cylindrical casing 4, is arranged a coil spring 6, which is substantially smaller in circumference than the inner surface of the casing 4. The casing 4 is provided near the forward and rear ends thereof with inwardly extending lugs 7, which limit the longitudinal movement of the coil spring 6.

In use, the pin 1 provided with the crimped end 3, is inserted within the cylindrical casing 4, and the coil spring 6 being substantially smaller in circumference than the internal surface of the casing 6, will have sufficient room within which to expand, when its turns are forced outwardly by the bent portion of the crimped end 3 of the pin. It will be obvious that the coil spring 6 will frictionally engage the crimped end 3 and thus prevent accidental displacement of the pin 1, it being understood that owing to the yielding character of the spring 6, the pin 1 may be withdrawn from the casing 4 when a sufficient amount of exertion is applied thereto.

I wish it understood that the pin holding device comprising the casing 4 may be ar ranged upon a hat, or the same may be used in connection with an ornamental hair pin or the like, in this case the hair pin is to be provided with a crimped end.

Having fully described my invention, I claim:

1. In a device of the character described, a metal casing, a head secured to one end of said casing for closing the same, a coil spring arranged within said casing and normally having its turns of the same size, a pin having its end crimped and adapted for insertion within the axial opening of the coil spring, the crimped portion of said pin forcing the turns of the coil spring outwardly to engage the casing, and said pin being removably held by the spring.
