Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1911.
Application led June 15, 1908. Serial No. 438,550.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LEONARD DRAKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sporting- Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sport-ing shoes, and more particularly to gymnasium or indoor running shoes and slippers.
It has for its principal objects to prolong the wearing life of such shoes, to facilitate the renewal of the soles, and to attain certain advantages hereinafter more fully appearing.
rlhe wearing life of the soles of certain or all existing gymnasium or indoor running shoes and slippers as now made, is, in the greater number of instances, much shorter than that of the uppers of suoli shoes. So far as I am aware, there is no known method or device for satisfactorily prolonging the wearing life of such shoes.
The purpose of my invention, therefore, is to overcome the disadvantages of the construction of existing shoes and slippers in a simple and economical manner.
The invention consists principally in pro viding a removable and interchangeable wearing surface or portion of the outsole and, further, consists in the parts and in the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur, lFigure 1 is a longitudinal section of a slipper embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an Vinverted plan view of the outsole with the detachable member removed; Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the detachable member; and, Fig. e is a cross section on the line 1 4 of Fig. 1.
The Vamps or uppers and general construction of the shoes and slippers may be of any desirable construction and arrangement. My invention comprises an outsole 1 which may be stitched or secured to the vamp in any suitable manner. The outsole is perforated or provided with openings 2 throughout the area of the sole covered by the ball of the foot. Preferably, these holes 2 are elongated and quadrangular, as shown, but obviously, they may be made polygonal or circular, if desired, without departing from the invention. A detachable member' 3 comprising, preferably, a flexible rubber plate is provided with integral blocks or calks l which are made to fit the openings 2 in the outsole 1. This detachable member is made to t over the front portion of the inner side of the outsole, with the blocks or calks l projecting through the openings 2 to the outside. Preferably, the long aXes of the blocks 4 extend parallel to the long axis of the forward port-ion of the outsole 1, as shown, and in some cases it may be desirable to roughen the lower or wearing faces of the blocks or provide depressions 5 therein.
An insole 6 is provided so as to act as a buifer or protection for the foot of the wearer. Preferably, this insole is of diiferent thicknesses at its extremities. That is, the front portion is made to fit upon the detachable member 3 while its rear portion 7 is built up or made thicker to fill the space back of the detachable member 3. It is preferable to cut the member 3 off straight at the rear, as at 8, (see Figs. 1 and 3), and to provide an abrupt shoulder 9 on the insolev which is adapted to fit thereagainst. This arrangement prevents the insole from creeping forward and crowding into the toe of the shoe.
When the bearing blocks or calks 4 become worn, the insole 6 may be removed and the detachable member 3 readily replaced by a new one, thereby prolonging the wearing life of the shoe. So, too, by providing interchangeable members 3 equipped with spikes the same shoe or slipper may be used for outdoor use when necessary.
Obviously, the device may be modified without departing from the invention, and, therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the construction and arrangement shown.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A sporting shoe or slipper provided with a permanent outsole having a plurality of openings in its tread portion, a detachable and renewable tread member having a portion arranged to cover the inner side of said outsole tread portion and having blocks thereon arranged to lit and project through said openings to the outside of said outsole, and a detachable, loosely laid insole fitted to the inside of said shoe so as to cover said detachable tread member, having a shoulder at its rear portion adapted to fit behind the lear end of said detachable tread member7 and conforming to the shape of the inner side of the bottom of the shoe.
In testimony whereof I have Signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses this 13th day of June, 1908, at St. Louis, Missouri.
