Description

BRUSH WITH CIRCULAR NON SYMMETRICAL BRISTLE OUTLINE
Background The beauty industry is driven by changing fashions in hair styling. Many of the hair styles require that a hot air blower be used to expand the hair, while drying the hair at the same time. Such blowing and contouring provides the raised and full appearance of modern hair style, without the requirement of inserts being placed within the hair.
Hair stylists at the present time must juggle a number of different brushes in one hand while at the same time the other hand is used to hold the hair blower. Due to the different shapes of the brushes, some of which are flat, and others which have a round shape, with larger or smaller diameters, different brushes are required to obtain different contours for hair styles. The ability to manipulate the hair brushes, at the same time that the hair is being brushed and blown dried, requires great dexterity and speed and is a definite limitation on the ease and outcome of the hair style achieved.
Summary of the Invention In the present invention half of the conventional round cross section of the bristles becomes ridged and triangular in shape, which then follows into the half round of the brush. This provides a general appearance of a pear. This can be achieved either by changing the cross section of the central bristle support or changing the length of the bristles.
In an alternative embodiment of the present invention, a paddle brush, which conventionally has a totally flat plane, the brush incorporates a flat plane S having bristles on both sides of the flat plane, and also a half round portion on both edges.
Objects of the Present Invention It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved hair brush that is easier to use. It is still another object of the present invention to provide an improved hair brush that is capable of obtaining greater fullness of the hair.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide an improved hair brush that is capable of replacing a number of different brushes. It is another object of the present invention to provide an improved hair brush that is able to obtain improved fullness of the hair.
It is yet another object of the present invention to provide an improved hair brush that is easy to manufacture. These and other objects of the present invention will be apparent from a review of the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 is a partial sectional perspective view of the brush of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along lines 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a partial side sectional view taken along lines 3-3 of Figure 1. Figure 4 is a partial sectional perspective view of an alternative embodiment of the brush of the present invention.
Figure 5 is a sectional view of an alternative embodiment of the brush taken along lines 5-5 of Figure 4. Figure 6 is a partial side sectional view of an alternative embodiment of the brush taken along lines 6-6 of figure 4.
Detailed Description of the Drawings Referring to Figures 1-3 the preferred embodiment of the present invention is shown. The brush 10, is elongated and has a generally rectangular handle 12 and a substantially round bristle support portion 14. The bristles 16 extend from the bristle support member 14 generally perpendicular to the surface of the bristle support member 14. The handle portion 12 has a smaller width 13 than the depth and has a bulge 15 at its center for ease of holding. As is more clearly shown in Figure 3, the cross section of the outer portion of the bristles 16 is not circular, but is semicircular on one half 18 while the other half of the outer portion of the bristles 20 form a 5 gradually sloping ridge or projection 19 so as to create a symmetrical configuration on both sides of the center line C shown in Figure 3. This shape is the general configuration of a pear.
The bristles 16 are made of a number of "hairs", which
10 may be real hair, such as from horses, or artificial products such as extruded plastic. The bristles 16 are attached to the bristle support member 14 by conventional means, such as by creating small holes in the bristle support member with the bristles being held by a force fit
15 into the holes or adhesively attached. Other means of affixing the bristles 16 to the bristle support member 14 may be used, such as during the molding operation. Additionally, the bristles 16 may be formed of plastic and formed integrally with a plastic handle.
20 The use of the symmetrical configuration around center line C permits the brush to be used by either a right handed person or a left handed person.
The use of the brush of Figures 1-3 is as follows: While holding the brush at the base of the scalp and
25 having the hair blower in the opposite hand, the hair is moved away from the scalp while rotating the brush to direct the hair blower initially to the rounded portion of the brush. As the brush is further rotated to the ridge part 19 of the brush is brought into the flow of the hair
30 blower, thereby creating a ridge. This achieves the greatest fullness and volume of the hair at that location.
In the preferred embodiment the bristles 16 are of different sizes so as to create the outer circumference configuration. However, it is possible to have the bristle
35 support 14 have a non circular cross section and use bristles 16 of the same size. This would also provide the non uniform outer circumference. However, the length of -4- the bristles should be relatively short to prevent them from bending substantially during their use. The preferred embodiment allows the use of short bristles which are more capable of supporting and separating the strands of hair. Referring to figures 4-6, an alternative embodiment of the present invention 100 is disclosed in which the bristle support member 104 is flat on two sides 115 and 117 and is surrounded by a bulging covering 105 and lO-T^-m the two flat surfaces. A curved portion at both ends 110 and 112 joins the two flat surfaces. The bristles 121 are molded plastic and are attached by passing them through opening 123 in the covering 107 and 105, and are prevented from passing through the openings 123 by enlarged portions 125, as is conventional. The two flat portions 105 and 107 of the brush permit the brush to be used by a person that is either right handed or left handed. The brush is used as follows:
Holding the half round part of the brush at the base of the scalp and the hair blower in the opposite hand, the user rotates the brush onto the flat portion. The brush is continued to be rotated, directing the air stream of the hair blower to the other half-round portion of the brush. Thus, the brush is essentially approximately 180 degrees. This brush allows drying the hair either straight and smooth like the conventional paddle brush or to dry it straight and smooth and have it turn under at the ends. This unique design of the brush allows greater control and a more efficient manner in drying the hair.
It is recognized that other embodiments of the present invention can be made which do not depart from the inventive concept of the present invention.
