Abstract
A stick used in ice hockey matches or similar matches, comprising a handle, a broad part (6) of cellular construction fixed to the handle and a blade (8) of cellular construction as extension of the broad part. The broad part and the blade are of cellular construction and formed by joining half-frames, most suitably made of ABS plastic, the outer shell of which vitally determines the final stick shaped, whereby said halves contain stiffening ribs inside the broad part and the blade part and the surface of the broad part and the blade part has a layer of reinforced plastic.
Description
ICE HOCKEY GOAL KEEPER STICK
The invention relates to a stick to be used by the goal keeper, in icehockey matches, which has a broad part extended by a blade part in proper angle.
Present ice hockey goal keeper sticks are manufactured so that the handle is of solid wood, multilayer plywood or solid wood covered with reinforced plastic or of polyurethane plastic covered with reinforced plastic. The blade is made either of solid wood, veneers, wear-proof plastic, e.g. ABS, or polyure¬ thane plastic, all such blades covered with reinforced plastic.
The disadvantages of the above illustrated constructions are, especially, insufficient strength of the broad part and the blade part and too heavy weight of the stick. If much wood is used in a stick, there will be, due to natural properties of wood, great differences in the playing gualities, strength and weight of sticks.
By this invention the said disadvatanges are eliminated con¬ siderably and the playing gualities increased in many ways. The invention is characterized in what is presented in the intro¬ duction chapter of the enclosed patent claims.
The advantage of this invention is that the weight of stick be¬ comes ever lighter, its gualities improve, the schock by the puck damps out much better and the bouncing of buck gets damped, too. Both the shock and the abrasion resistance increase thanks to the material used in the broad part and the blade part and also because its being inside the construction, mainly in form of cells or stiffening ribs.
In the following the invention is disclosed with reference to the enclosed drawing, where
Fig. 1 shows the side view of the stick.
Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of the stick handle.
Fig. 3 shows sections of the broad part and the blade part. Fig. 4 shows the side view of the construction of the broad part and the blade part Fig. 5 shows cross-sections of unsymmetrical forms.
In figure 1 the stick is viewed from the side and the positions of profiles pesented. Figure 2 shows the cross-section of the stick handle made both of solid wood 2 and covered with veneers 1 and, alternatively, made of a reinforced plastic composite 3, whereby the inner tube 4 is hollow. With the latter construction a lighter design is reached.
Figure 3 is a cross-section from the the broad part upper end, section B-B, where the stick handle is inside the broad part. The frame of the broad part consists of two halves 6 fixed to¬ gether and made of ABS plastic, in between of which there is space for the stick handle. The broad part is covered by pres¬ sing reinforced plastic layers 5 on the stick surface. Space 4 illustrates the hollow construction.
Section C-C is the spot, where there isn't any handle inside the broad part anymore and the broad part is somewhat flattened. Stiffening ribs 9 are visible in the cross-section matching to¬ gether in both halves when the halves are connected.
Section D-D is the blade part, where the frame is still of ABS plastic. The blade has got thinner having almost the same thick¬ ness from one end to the other and longitudinal hollow spaces 4. With regard to the above presented sections, all corresponding frame parts are covered by pressing reinforced plastic layers on their surface.
Figure 4 is a half-frame illustrated with broad part 6 and blade part 8 joined together. However, the broad part and the blade part are casted separately of ABS plastic, then glued together to form a complete half-frame. They can, of course, be casted of plastic as one unit.
In broad part 6 there are mainly longitudinal stiffeners 7 and 9 and diagonal ribs 11 in the middle. In blade 8 there are only longitudinal stiffeners 12. If parts 6 and 8 are separate com¬ ponents glued together, there is in the bending point a dovetail groove 13 by means of which the tendency of the parts to pivot can be blocked.
Two half-frames, mirror images of each other, as per figure 4, are most favourably glued together to form the frame of the stick. By glueing, the built-in stiffeners in the frame are also glued together. Instead of glueing, also plastic welding can be applied.
In figure 5 cross-sections of some unsymmetric forms, possible in sections B, C and D, are illustrated.
Since there will be rather much empty space inside the stick frame, the stick becomes much lighter than the present ones, whereby the goalkeeper has more time to react with the stick. It is also possible to make the manufacturing of frame easy by mould casting. As material, instead of ABS plastic, a synthetic raw material can also be used.
Claims
1. A stick used in ice hockey matches or similar matches, com¬ prising a handle, a broad part (6) of cellular construction fixed to the handle and a blade (8) of cellular construction as extension of the broad part characterized in that the broad part and the blade part are composed of formable plastic, most suit¬ ably half-frames of ABS plastic, the outer shell of which vital¬ ly determines the final stick shape, whereby said halves contain stiffening ribs inside the broad part and the blade part and that the surface of the broad part and the blade has a layer of reinforced plastic.
2. A stick according to patent claim 1, characterized in that both the broad part and the blade part have a half-frame of their own and that the broad part and the blade part interlap when fixed together.
3. A stick according to patent claim 1, characterized in that the half-frame to be connected to another half-frame contains the broad part and the blade part.
4. A stick according to any of the above patent claims 1 - 3 characterized in that the stiffening ribs in the half-frames match and are joined together.
5. A stick according to any of the above patent claims 1 - 4 characterized in that the cross-section of the broad part and of the blade part is unsymmetric.
