Abstract

The invention comprises a bag in the form of a body with a mouth area. A panel (3) is engaged to the body each side of the mouth area so that the panel (3) spans the mouth area. The invention also includes a method of forming a bag comprising providing packaging material in an elongated sheet. A strip of material is applied to the packaging material so that the strip of material engages the bag adjacent the edges thereof but not in a central portion. A bag is formed such that the strip of applied material forms a panel (3) about a selected part such as an edge of the bag, the panel (3) being engaged to the body of the bag on each face but being free of the bag in the edge or other portion of the bag. At least part of the panel (3) is positioned outside the walls of the bag.

Description

BAG WITH TAMPER EVIDENT FEATURE
This invention relates to a bag and particularly, though not necessarily solely to a bag formed from plastics material.
Background of the Invention
There is a continuing need to provide security or tamper evident packaging which can be manufactured in a straightforward reliable and economic fashion.
Object
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a bag which will go at least some way towards meeting the foregoing desiderata in a simple yet effective manner or which will at least provide the public with a useful choice.
Summary of the Invention
Accordingly the invention consists in a bag comprising a body with a mouth area, and a panel engaged to said body each side of said mouth area so that said panel spans said mouth area, at least part of the panel being external to the bag.
Preferably the mouth area is perforated or otherwise weakened.
Preferably the panel is perforated or otherwise weakened between the engaged areas.
Preferably a tear bead is provided in said mouth area. Preferably a tear bead is provided on said panel between the positions of engagement of the panel to the bag.
In a further aspect the invention consists in a method of forming a bag comprising the steps of providing packaging material in an elongated sheet, applying thereto a strip of material so that said strip of material engages said bag adjacent the edges thereof but not in a central portion and forming a bag such that said strip of applied material forms a panel about a selected part of the bag, the panel being engaged to the body of the bag on each face but being free of the bag in the selected part of the bag.
To those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, many changes in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of the invention will suggest themselves without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. The disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.
Brief Description of the Drawings
One preferred form of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic cross sectional view of part of the body of a bag with a panel adhered thereto,
Figure 2 is an enlarged drawing of part of the construction of figure 1 in a variation of the invention, and
Fi ure 3 is a diagrammatic cross sectional view of part of the bag as shown in figure 1 when formed into a bag construction. Modes for Carrying out the Invention
Referring to the drawings a sheet of flexible packaging material 1 is provided which may, for example, be a roll of plastics material so that material is drawn from the roll and formed to a bag, for example, on vertical form and fill apparatus or otherwise as required. At a point 2 of the material is a position which is intended to become the mouth of the bag when the bag is ultimately opened. A panel of material 3 is provided which is engaged with the material 1 each side of the area 2 being adhered, for example, by gluing, heat sealing or otherwise in the positions 4 so that in the area 10 the panel 3 is not engaged with the material 1. The bag may be manufactured by bringing together an elongated strip of the panel material 3 and the bag material 1 and engaging one with the other, for example, in substantially known manner.
The material 1 is then formed to a bag construction, for example, on form and fill machinery such as vertical form and fill machinery substantially in the known manner but so that the panel 3 becomes positioned substantially as shown in figure 3, that is to say over an edge of the bag which has the area 2 along that edge. In alternative embodiments such as shown in Figure 4 the panel 3 is positioned other than at an edge, for example in the body of a wall of the bag.
It is desirable that in the area 2 a line or perforations or a weakened line 5 is provided so that the bag when closed may be readily opened at the desired position. A similar weakened line or line of perforations 6 can be provided in the panel 3. Opening of the bag and opening of the panel 3 can be enhanced in either or both positions by providing a tear strip or bead 7 and 8 adjacent the perforations or weakened lines 5 and 6 if desired. Of course the tear strip 7 or 8 could be provided without providing the perforations or weakened strip and opening achieved by forcing the tear strip 7 or 8 through the material of the bag 1 or panel 3 to achieve separation of that material and thus opening.
When formed, for example, on vertical form and fill machinery the bag formed as above described will be filled with a desired material and cut into bags or packages in substantially the known manner. However the formed and filled bag will have a panel 3 over the intended mouth of each bag so formed. When it is desired to open the bag firstly the panel 3 is opened and secondly the bag is opened (if required) at the position 2. Thus once the panel 3 is opened or even partially opened it is possible for the user to determine whether the bag itself has been opened or tampered with.
Thus it can be seen that at least in the preferred form of the invention a bag and/or a method of providing a bag are provided which has the advantage that the bag may be formed on what is essentially well known equipment using well known techniques thereby allowing a reliable package to be formed in a substantially inexpensive manner. However once formed the construction forms a suitable security bag as it has a tamper evident feature in that once the panel 3 is opened it can be readily determined that tampering with the bag.
In an alternative construction the bag material 1 has the panel 3 engaged with the inner surface 12 of the bag rather than the outer surface 13. The bag material rather than being unbroken is provided with a slot 14 and the panel material 3 is extended outwardly through the slot 14 to form a fold of material 15. The fold of material once cut through whether by cutting or the use of tear strips and with or without perforations becomes the mouth of the bag and still provides a tamper evident feature.
In each embodiment at least part of the panel is provided external to the finished bag either by being fixed to the outside of the bag or by extending through a slot in the edge or wall of the bag.
If desired reclose elements can be provided in Figure 3 reclose elements 16, that is to say connectable and separable elongated buttons rib and a co-operating elongated narrow mouth channel may be positioned on panel 3 or bag 1 or both at positions 17 and 18 for example.
In Figure 4 reclose elements 16 and 16a, 16b may be positioned at either or both illustrated positions. The reclose elements may be formed integrally with the plastics material on which they are positioned or be provided on strips (ie. a narrow base carrier) or on tapes (ie. a wide base carrier) as desired.
