Abstract

An apparatus for mechanical removal of pests and their eggs from the hair and fur is provided. In one embodiment, the apparatus is comprised of a handle having an aperture, a plurality of teeth protruding through the aperture, and a means for sealing the aperture to prevent entrance of the pests and their eggs into the interior portion of the handle. In another embodiment, the handle is solid, preferably plastic, and a plurality of teeth protrude from the solid handle. In an embodiment especially suitable for self removal of pests, the instant invention is comprised of a plurality of single combs (1010, 2010) wherein each comb has a handle and a plurality of protruding teeth (50a, 50b). The combs are arranged in layers so that the teeth of one layer are shifted relative to the teeth of an adjacent layer in that a tooth from a first layer is proximal to the space between teeth in the adjacent layer. In this embodiment, a first comb is mated to a second comb by a fastener means. The fastener means may allow rotation of the combs one relative to the other as when a pivot pin (140) is provided or the fastener means may only secure the single combs in the desired position one to the other as when an encasement is provided. Further, a device (900) for cleaning the spaces between the teeth comprised of a base having a plurality of apertures, each aperture for receiving a tooth, is provided. The apertures are sized to closely fit the teeth while allowing the base to engage the length of the teeth without substantially spreading one tooth from the other, when the user moves the device for cleaning the spaces between the teeth along the length of the teeth. The device for cleaning the spaces between the teeth may be used with any of the aforementioned. When used with a comb having a plurality of layers of teeth, the apertures are preferably arranged in layers in one base. The device for clearing the spaces between the teeth scrapes the teeth thus removing pests and their eggs from the teeth. The device for cleaning the spaces between the teeth may also serve to close the aperture in the comb base, thus preventing pests from accumulating therein.
