Abstract

Interactive medication data systems (300) and methods are provided which include automated apparatus for providing information pursuant to telephonic and electronic requests from callers (355, 356, 357, 358, 359, 360, 361). The system includes a database containing information for patients and a variety of medications, a host system database containing prescription data for these medications, and apparatus for receiving an incoming audio communication (330) relating to a request for information concerning a specific medication. The audio communication contains a unique personal identifier which can be mapped to one patient in the host system database. The system then prompts the caller with a menu of selections relating to the patient's active prescriptions, such as refill or dosage requirements. The caller then selects an option which produces a selection signal. The selection signal guides the system to look for specific data in the database and the system produces an audio or visual response to the caller.

comprises a portion of a social security number of the patient.
3. The telephony method of Claim 1 wherein said unique identifier comprises a unique number which is dispensed to the patient in conjunction with a specific medication.
4. The telephony method of Claim 1, wherein said selectable operations include at least one of the group consisting of obtaining information about common usage of a medication, obtaining information about side effects of the medication, obtaining information about drug-to-drug interaction.
5. (Unchanged) The telephony method of Claim 1 wherein said database comprises a pharmacy database or electronic patient record. 31
6. An automated telephony system 200 for responding to an incoming audio communication from a caller, characterized by: a database containing information representing each of a plurality of patients 214, 216, 226; sound processing means 340 for receiving an incoming audio communication 10 via a telecommunications network 354; said audio communication containing a unique identifier 212 which is associated with a specific one of the patients in said database 214; computer processing means 330 for identifying a list of selectable operations to the caller, the list of selectable operations being specific to said specific patient; said sound processing means 340 including means for receiving a selection signal representing one of said selectable operations 220; said computer processing means 330 matching said selection signal with a portion of the medical information in said database 216, 226, wherein said computer processing means 330 includes: means for displaying a menu 222 containing a plurality of active pre- ^options for said patient, means for receiving a selection of one of said prescriptions 222, and means for delivering a refill or renewal order 224, or performing a status check on the refill or renewal order, or providing educational, diagnosis or treatment information relating to said patient's prescriptions.
7. The automated telephony system of claim 9, further comprising sound generating means for providing an output to the caller which is representative of said portion of information relating to said specific patient.
8. The automated telephony system of claim 9, wherein said unique identifier comprises a social security number.
9. A method for accessing medical information in a database, comprising the steps of:
(a) storing a plurality of data pertaining to a patient in a database;
(b) receiving an audio communication identifying the patient and a medication 40; 32
(c) automatically matching 50 the medication identified in the audio communication with one of a plurality of known medications for which data are stored in the database; and
(d) determining whether the medication identified in the communication has an interaction with a further medication the patient is taking, the determination being performed based on the plurality of data pertaining to the patient in the database.
10. A method according to claim 10, wherein the data pertaining to the patient in the database include at least one of the group consisting of: (i) prescription medicines the patient is taking; (ii) non-prescription medicines the patient is taking; (iii) a medical condition of the patient; and (iv) health-related information concerning the patient's lifestyle.
