Abstract

The present invention is directed to novel skin treatment compositions, which find particular utility in treating human skin with an acne condition or a pre-acne condition. Additionally, the present invention is also directed to compositions useful as makeup removers, particularly for users with oily skin who have or are predisposed to acquiring an acne condition.

Description

ACNE TREATMENT COMPOSITIONS
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to novel skin treatment compositions and makeup removers. More particularly, the present invention relates to compositions for the treatment of acne and to makeup removers, particularly makeup removers which are useful for removing makeup from facial skin of users with an acne condition or who may be predisposed to develop an acne condition.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Millions of individuals, particularly young teenage boys and girls in the pubescent years, suffer with the skin condition commonly known as acne. Typically, for a large portion of the human population, this condition will extend into young adulthood and be accompanied, if not in fact caused, at least in part, by an overproduction of oils by the skin. While numerous compositions are known in the art which purport to be effective either as acne treatment medications or as facial makeup removers, to date none has been found which is a panacea for the problems of skin acne. Applicants are aware of the following prior art references which are generally related to the invention here:
Vermeer, U.S. Patent No. 5,641,480, relates to hair care products that have improved foam, viscosity, clarity and conditioning characteristics due to the inclusion of a heteroatom containing alkyl aldonamide compounds.
Quay, U.S. Patents Nos. 5,595,723 and 5,558,855, each disclose non-cosmetic compositions for use in diagnostic ultrasound procedures comprising aqueous colloidal dispersions . Bissett et al . , U.S. Patent No. 5,384,115, teaches photoprotective compositions comprising a radical scavenging agent and an anti-inflammatory agent for topical application to prevent skin damage from UV exposure. Each of U.S. Patents Nos. 4,847,069, 4,847,071, 4,847,072, 4,946,691, 4,954,332, 4,869,897, and 5,039,513 discloses photoprotective compositions having carrier vehicles similar to those of the present invention, but none of these compositions make use of coco diethanolimides.
U.S. Patents Nos. 4,869,897, 5,039,513, and 4,806,572, teach a makeup cleaning pad having nonylphenol, sodium xylene, sulfonate, silicone oil, fatty ethanol amides and other agents. Neither EDTA nor lanolin are taught as being useful.
Vahlerberghe et al . , U.S. Patent No. 3,928,224 discloses a shampoo composition which results from a polycondensation reaction of glycidol an alphadiols in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. Notwithstanding, the foregoing prior art references,
Applicants are not aware of any reference which teaches the totality of the compositions of the present invention or the use of such compositions in the manner taught here.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide skin treatment compositions for treating human skin with an acne condition or a pre acne condition.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide a method of treating human skin with an acne or pre-acne condition comprising applying an effective amount of a composition according to the invention.
It is a further object of the invention to provide makeup removing compositions which are particularly useful or use in connection which skin having an acne condition or a pre-acne condition.
It is a yet further object of the present invention to provide a method of removing makeup from facial skin comprising applying a composition according to the invention. The foregoing objectives will become more apparent to one skilled in the art in the disclosure below. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention, cosmetic compositions are based upon combinations of two or more of the following ingredients :
(1) TERGITOL N9® (nonylphenol + 9 EO polyentoxylate) , which is a commercially available material sold by Ashland Chemical Co. ;
(2) PILOT or CALSUDS CD6® (coco diethanolamide) which is a commercially available material sold by Ashland Chemical; (3) Lanolin (Lanolin USP Super Fine Grade) ;
(4) VERSENE 100® (aqueous solution of tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) which is a commercially available material sold by Dow Chemical Co.;
(5) SXS (sodium xylene sulfonate, 40%); and (6) SILICONE EMULSION E-148® (aqueous emulsion of silicone fluid) which is a commercially available material sold by SWS Silicones Corp., in combination with water, preferably distilled water. In two more particular formulations, an acne treatment composition could be comprised as follows:
(a) from about 3 to 15% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of TERGITOL NP9;
(b) from about 2 to 10% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of CALSUDS CD6; (c) from about 0.5 to 3% by weight, based upon the total weight of the composition, of lanolin;
(d) from about 0.5 to 3% by weight, based upon the total weight of the composition, of SXS;
(e) from about 0.3 to 3% by weight, based upon the total weight of the composition, of VERSENE 100; and
(f) the balance to 100% by weight of water.
The above formulation could also be used as a makeup remover. However, a preferred embodiment of a makeup remover comprises: (a) from about 2 to 20% by weight, more preferably from about 5 to 12% by weight, based upon the total weight of the composition, of TERGITOL NP9;
(b) from about 2 to 12% by weight, more preferably from about 3 to 10% by weight, based upon the total weight of the composition, of CALSUDS CD6;
(c) from about 0.7 to 4% by weight, more preferably about 0.8 to 3.5% by weight, based upon the total weight of the composition, of VERSENE 100, and
(d) the balance to 100% by weight of water. Typical formulations of the foregoing ingredients for each of the different product categories described herein above are presented in the following examples, wherein, unless otherwise indicated, the components are combined and mixed until a composition of uniform consistency is obtained: EXAMPLES

The above exemplary formulations are lotions that can be applied by a user. It is within the scope of the invention that the compositions can comprise additional known excipients and/or additional ingredients and that they could be in the form of creams, mists, or other solutions.
It is within the scope of the invention that the skin treatment compositions will be applied as needed, consistent with like products now available. For example, it is anticipated that an acne treatment composition according to the invention would be applied to the effected area only 1 or 2 times a day, preferably once, for from about 7 to 10 days. A makeup removal composition would be applied as needed, most likely no more than once, or maybe twice, a day. It should be noted that the makeup removers according to the invention have been found to be especially effective in removing waterproof makeup. It will thus be seen that the objects set forth above, among those made apparent from the preceding description, are efficiently attained and, since certain changes may be made in the compositions set forth without departing from he spirit and scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
