Description

CENTER CONSOLE ASSEMBLY
Field of the Invention
The subject invention relates to a center console assembly for disposition adjacent a seat in an automotive vehicle, typically between the seats for storing various articles.
Description of the Prior Art
Such assemblies are of various constructions and nearly all share the objective of maximizing storage space with a minimum complexity, both in fabrication and operation. Typical assemblies include a housing having side walls defining a compartment with an open top periphery and upper and lower shelves movable between a storage position in the compartment and an extended position outside the compartment. Examples of such assemblies are disclosed in U. S. Patents 5,853,220 to Gulich et al and 5,562,049 to Hoffman et al. However, the prior art assemblies take up an inordinate amount of space in either the storage or extended positions.
Summary of the Invention
The subject invention provides a center console assembly for disposition adjacent a seat in an automotive vehicle to an provide expanded storage area. The assembly comprises a housing having side walls defining a compartment with an open top periphery and upper and lower shelves movable between a storage position in the compartment and an extended position outside the compartment. The assembly is characterized by a linkage mechanism interconnecting the shelves and said housing for moving the shelves vertically in unison from the storage position with the shelves spaced vertically from and overlying one another to the extended position with the shelves remaining vertically spaced from and overlying one another to provide access to both of the shelves.
Accordingly, the subject invention provides a maximum amount of storage space yet effectively minimizing complexity in fabrication and operation.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Other advantages of the present invention will be readily appreciated as the same becomes better understood by reference to the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the subject invention in the extended position; and
Figure 2 is also a perspective view but showing the assembly in the storage position.
Detailed Description of The Preferred Embodiment
Referring to the Figures, wherein like numerals indicate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, a center console assembly for disposition adjacent a seat in an automotive vehicle is generally shown at 10.
The assembly 10 includes a housing, generally indicated at 12, having side walls 14 and end walls 16 defining a compartment, generally indicated at 18, with an open top periphery.
A pair of upper 20 and lower 22 shelves are movable between a storage position in the compartment 18 and an extended position outside the compartment 18.
The assembly 10 is characterized by a linkage mechanism 24, 26, 28 interconnecting the shelves 20 and 22 and the housing 12 for moving the shelves 20 and 22 vertically in unison from the storage position with the shelves 20 and 22 spaced vertically from and overlying one another (Figure 2) to the extended position with the shelves 20 and 22 remaining vertically spaced from and overlying one another to provide access to both of the shelves 20 and 22 (Figure 1). The open top periphery includes a recess 29 for receiving and supporting the upper shelf 20 in the storage position.
The linkage mechanism 24, 26, 28 includes at least one compartment link 24 interconnecting the lower shelf 22 and the housing 12 for moving the lower shelf 22 between the storage and extended positions. The shelves 20 and 22 have ends and side edges and a pair of the compartment links 24 are spaced from one another along the one side edge of the lower shelf 22. Each compartment link 24 has first and second ends and a first pivotal connection 28 pivotally connecting the first end to one side edge of the lower shelf 22 and a second pivotal connection 30 pivotally connecting the seconds end to the housing 12.
The linkage mechanism 24, 26, 28 also includes at least one shelf link 26, 28 interconnecting the shelves 20 and 22 for maintaining the shelves 20 and 22 in the vertically spaced relationship to one another during the movement between the storage and extended positions. A pair of the shelf links 26, 28 are disposed at each of the ends of the shelves 20 and 22 and each pair of the shelf links 26, 28 are disposed generally parallel to one another. Each of the shelf links 26, 28 has top and bottom ends with the top ends pivotally 5 connected to the upper shelf 20 and the bottom ends pivotally connected to the lower shelf 22. A stabilizer 32 in the form of a spring limits the movement of the shelf links 26, 28 to maintain the shelves 20 and 22 vertically spaced from one another. Instead of a spring, the stabilizer may take the form of a latch interconnecting one of the shelf links 26, 28 and the housing 12 to prevent or limit movement of the shelf links 26, 28 relative to the housing 10 12.
As will be appreciated, the linkage mechanism retains the relative orientation between the shelves 20 and 22 so that the shelves 20 and 22 do not rotate relative to one another while being maintained the parallel and vertically spaced relationship.
An armrest pad 34 is disposed on the upper shelf 20 and is pivotally connected to 15 one edge 36 of the upper shelf 20 for movement between an armrest position overlying the upper shelf 20 and a raised position allowing access to the upper shelf 20.
A drawer 38 having pockets 40 is movably supported in one wall 16 of the housing 12 for movement between open and closed positions. The drawer 38 is pivotally connected to the housing 12 at the bottom thereof and swings open for access to the 0 pockets 40.
The invention has been described in an illustrative manner, and it is to be understood that the terminology which has been used is intended to be in the nature of words of description rather than of limitation.
Obviously, many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible 5 in light of the above teachings and the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described within the scope of the appended claims.
