Abstract

The invention relates to alkali-resistant ink formulations prepared from hybrid alkyd-acrylic resins. The inks contain hybrid resins prepared by the polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer or latent oxidatively functional acrylic monomer in the presence of a waterborne alkyd having at least one pendant sulfonate functionality. Other components may include inorganic and/or organic pigment dispersions, driers, drier activators, waxes, and buffers. Additional additives may be included for other desired properties. The inks of the present invention have lower VOC's, improved gloss, and improved alkali resistance when compared to epoxy ester inks currently used water based alkali resistant inks. The inks of the present invention are particularly useful for printing on polyethylene coated board such as that used for milk cartons.
